Liberty 92 Adaptor gearbox question
vwpete - February 23rd, 2006 at 01:13 PM

OOk I have bit the Bullet and am finally gonna try out one of these Subaru washing machine things.

Just put deposit down on a ej22 liberty 92 engine, should have it in a week or so.

My plan is to put this in my Chenoweth rail (not road licensed), I have done a fair bit of research and have read through gazillions of posts on this forum and others.

I rang up COR regarding Adaptor kits, to be told that sticking this motor onto a 1600 combie box has issues, I apparently need a 2 litre box or at least a 2 litre bell housing plus the long guide tube.

Has anyone come across this and do ya have any tips to shoe horn this thing onto a 1600 box?

I am only interested in the mating of the motor to me gearbox for now.

I have already filled my head with the other works
Like wiring, sump, fuel, bottom mount, cooling and exhaust etc. but I am sure u will see posts from me on that when I get to them.

Plus if anyone is interested, I can start a progress thread showing how I get on and provide the PIics, Gotcha’s and pricing along the way.

So far I paid $900 for an ej22 92 with full loom exhaust headers sensors and radiator

EJ22 will fit into a 1600 kombi box but you will need a 200mm adaptor kit and not the 228mm one. If CORC don't have them Volksconversions do.

Thanx for that info, I rang john at Volksconversions, Man that guy he knows his stuff.

Has anyone had any issues with using a standard beetle 200mm clutch with an ej22, will it slip? Do I need to use a heavier clutch plate??

I run a standard 200mm clutch disc with a heavy duty pressure plate (kennedy stage2). Doesn't slip at all on an ej20. I originally had a standard vw pressure plate and a 5puck ceramic button clutch, this wouldnt slip at all and was a pain to drive on the streeet. Just get a heavy duty pressure plate
