1.8l 16v (KR) engine in a '70 bus
el_nino - March 6th, 2006 at 11:47 AM

Hi folks ,

In the near future (14 days or so) i'm gonna be building a volkswagen 1.8 litre 16v type KR engine , aka GTI , in my 'a bus

I live in Belgium , people overhere definetly dont like watercooled engines in aircooled VW's , but my motivation is prolly the same as most of us , more economical , more power , more reliable , cheaper parts , ... I understand there objections but it goes to rediculous lenghts ...

As i see you guys got a forum especialy for non VW engine conversions , i take it ausie's are much more relaxed when it goes about that particular subject so i guess i'll be hanging out alot here :D

I already got an adapter plate , a 2L T2b transmition (longer gear ratio's) and the engine with the whole 9 yards on it (ecu , intake, exhaust downpipe, ...)

The first question i got is , does someone here already did this kind of modification ? Or does some1 here know any1 with it ? Pictures maybe ?

the first thing i'm gonna be breaking my head about is offcourse modding the crossmember so the engine at least can be hanging decently in the van , secondly, the ever lasting dilemma, wich radiator to use, where to put it and how to mount it ...

every tip is welcome !

Greetings

i dont know of anyone with a GTI engine in a bus.

subaru conversions are popular over here.

there was a bus in the uk with a TDI motor.

I thinkl you will be leaning foward going up hills , gti are all revs and no pull .

I haven't seen any completed bay window conversions with the 1.8 VW GTI motor, but there are a couple vanagon (T3) conversions with that motor in them.
The reports I've read seem to indicated a high level of satisfaction.
I figure if the torque is good enough for an 85 Vanagon it's good enough for 1970 bus.

Here's one, in the UK:

From this UK site, a lot of bus-owners are on it:

thx alot gerrelt !

Yeah i'd love to build in a TDI engine , my daily drive is a 130hp tdi golf IV , for a diesel i think its a fenomenal engine , but with the great (not) technical vehicle checkup here in belgium i cant convert fuel , if its a gasoline powered engine on the paper , whatever engine will be built in should be gasoline powered

I'm actualy not even sure if i'l get trough with the water cooled conversion but my chanses are pretty good as the local technical vehicle test centre are all pretty young guys , if there would be old farts working there i'd surely have to ensure it as an oldtimer to get trough , if you do that in belgium , you're not alowed to drive more then in a 25km radius of your home , not after dark , and alot of other bullshit rules ...

Hi el_nino,

here two pictures of a German conversion. It was for sale here, i donĀ“t know anything about the performance of it!

thx alot m8 !

crossmember looks like it could be stronger ...

Actually, it looks larger than the original VW mustache bar!

I like the idea of tying into the original engine mount points. It spreads the additional weight much more evenly to the chassis than a mid-engine crossmember bolted to the subframe.

Of course, you also must be concerned with tying the front of the cradle to something. It's a long way up to the front tranny mount!

with the original engine in the T2a is the same thing , its mounted in front of the tranny and in the rear on the enigne subframe, no more no less , in a t2b the trany is suported by a piece of frame tough ...

I didn't say the design was bad , thats pretty good , but the tubing used seems a bit skinny for the job, i'd be using 40 / 60 / 3 mm tubing , that looks like 30/30/2 :X
