About to start ej20t conversion into 68 squareback and wondering if the stock starter can crank it over, if not what have you guys done . Auto starter, hi torque one?
My ej20 quad cam n/a motor would not turn with a stock starter freeding 12 volt direct
I went with a kombi auto unit
i got a stock reconditioned 1800 starter for my V8 conversion and like the gull says... turns over with no stress at all
my ej20 n/a turned over fine with a standard beetle starter and a tiny battery. I now have a kombi box and starter and it turns over the same.
an ej20t should be easier than an n/a motor because of the lower compression.
yeah no worries
My ej20 n/a has the same heads as my Rs liberty same part numbers
the ej20 n/a is a 2ltr 16 valve ( legacy )
the rs turbo is a 2ltr 16 valve ( legacy )
and they go like 40 basterds each !
screw air cooled
cool thanks guys i've got various starters lying around ie 1800 , 2ltr , 6v plus recon 1600ones and also know of a auto t3 square back if I get
desperate for sale cheap.
I'll soon find out as i'm picking up rs front cut tomorrow for 2500 with only 55000 on the clock.
I've heard about stock 6v starters being used in a 12v car on a suby engine but have no experience with it.
I used a stock starter no problem with my EJ20t..
Rich
I too have a standard 1800 starter turning my NA 2.5l Ej. I reckon the trick is the earthing. I suggest running an extra battery strap from one of the starter mounting bolts back to the -ve pole on the battery. All my starter problems disappeared when I did this.
I run a 2L box with stock 2L starter on my 2.5L high compression V6. So it would have no worries with the suby.
Yep.
Ive got a crapy old 12volt T1 starter that I pulled out of the pile, turning my EJ20T. Its been in there for about 8 years now I think. No probs.
Last year gave it a birthday and bought a brand new 40 buck battery from super crap!
Check the bush in the trans, that needs to be good or new. They are only a couple bucks anyway. Might as well replace it now.
Good luck!
