EJ Water manifold (reversed) into '78 Bay
ElusiveStranger - August 3rd, 2006 at 09:08 PM
Has anyone fitted a reversed water manifold into a late bay?
How did you get around the chassis member clearence prob?
I reversed mine and it fitted the engine a treat. Then I fitted the motor to the bus. The manifold fouls :cry
Is it only Bugs and T25s that run a reversed manifold?

My bus's wasn't reversed. It would have hit the chassis....

Cheers Mick
I'd cut and turned it and it sat on the engine perfectly. It wasn't until fitting the engine that the problem showed. Grrr

But i cheated....I paid someone to do my engine conversion so i wouldn't make those kind of mistakes!!!!!!

The reversed manifold is a natural for vanagons as it matches the stock watercooled configuration.
For bays, it seems that the stock water outlet works better. Just plumb it into a burp tank and from there to the radiator.

Thanks Guys.
George I did U2U you a while ago.
You asked about heating, check out Gerrelt's reply on http://www.vwkd.co.uk under
heating (I think) and then his link to his Alfa conversion site. Nice bit of work.
Also try a Google on Water Swirl Pots.

Thanks greatly for the links.
Water swirl pots seem to be really "foreign" technology here in the US, probably because most hot-rod applications here have nice tall radiators in
front. Your Google seach suggestion provided a number of UK sites that had nice examples.
I'll probably end up having a tank fabbed. Shouldn't be too much trouble for a competent radiator man.
Thanks, George

Now I have to get a swirl pot for my bus, having just found out my rev manifold fouls my chassis, bugg3r. I hadn't heard of them before but I'm new
to cars (VeeDubs (cars) for 5 yrs & bikes for 20!)
I'm loving Helbus' conversion along with Surf & Swoosh.
I'm going for the underbody rad but using a Jag XK40 rad (cheers Rich Baker, I owe him beer)
It's good to share knowledge

Here's a pic of the swirl pot I would like:
The only change I want it the lower fitting either go straight out the bottom or be rotated 90 degrees CCW, looking down on the pot. The vertical
arrangement will work a lot better for my early Bay.

Well the hacksaw's been out again. It fits The manifold sits as
you'd expect but turns almost parallel to the block and points down to clear the chassis rail. Whoohoo
I have had to alter the heater return line to clear the new reversed manifold.
