Hi everyone, Im about to make a crossmember to fit a subaru ej22 into a 85 caravelle van. What type of material have other people used to make their
ones? I have a heap of 35x35x3mm SHS i could use. Just curious as to what everyone else uses.
Thanks,
Alex.
25 x 25 SHS, less than 3.0mm, maybe 2.5
i used 50x50x2.5 gal because i had it lying around. not heavy and i KNOW its strong enough
25 x 25 i think, i welded mine using similar size square bar to the factory crossmember,
if it is engineered correctly it shouldn't need the largest size square bar in my opinion, as long as welds are good and it is sturdy,
hope it helps mate
Thanks everyone, seems like the stuff i have will be fine.
Alex.
50x25x3mm with gussets at each join
I'm keen on a EJ22 coversion for my 90 Caravelle. I would love to see some pics and get more info about problems/pitfalls with this. My Caravelle is an auto. Does this cause any problems? How easy was the conversion?

I have an EG33 in my Transporter and I used 50mm heavy wall box.... A bit OTT, but is what I had in stock..... Its the typical under engine carrier deal, using the OEM Subi engine mounts.... but with a top mount over the bellhousing which is tied into a underfloor support frame.... Kinda works like the OEM subi pitch mount.... Well I hope it will.... If I ever get it finished!
