Water pump for water to air intercooler
72type3wrx - March 27th, 2007 at 04:19 PM

Hey Guys

Thanks for all the help so far, my car is nearly ready,
the last thing I think I need is a water pump for my water to air intercooler, I have the cooler and radiator but no pump, I can get a new subie one or bosch one but they are over 200bucks, any other ideas?

I know you can use any 12volt pump as the water only gets up to around 50 degrees and only needs to pump around 15 litres a minute but do you need to control the speed or just let it run flat out?

Thanks again guys

I got a pump online from deals direct cost about $80 and is pretty heavy duty.

The standard subaru pump will burn out pretty quickly if used flat out all the time. The subi ECU runs the pump at low speed when the TPS is under 80% and switches over to higher flow above 80% throttle.

Cheers Paul

Hi

I bought mine from a pump place in Surrey Hills. Its a Grocco unit, very heavy duty, it can be used for washing down boat decks etc, It was over $200 but can be run continually.

Don't bother with bilge pumps, they dont cut it.

Like paul said, the subaru ones increase with boost, this is essential, unless you get one that pumps stupid amounts all the time..not such a bad thing at all.

I tried it with a pissy pump when I somehow thought that I could get better than my air to air(idiot). The temps shot up on boost and took a litttle while to come down which says the pump was was too small.

I just cruised for 2 hours around dural, where it is cool, and my temps where 11 degrees - 13 when occasionally boosting up around 16psi.

Hi

I bought my Grocco pump from these people,
Afpac Pty Ltd
Flag no.1
50 Sophia St Surry Hills NSW 2010
ph: (02) 9211 0411

Ask their advice of the correct pump for the job. The Grocco pump I used is also used by MRT on Libertys.

Just a thought: Pushrod Subarus used a self-contained belt-driven water pump for their cooling water. If you add a flanged outlet to one of these where it normally bolts to the engine it might work well for an intercooler. No worries about it burning out when it is driven from the engine!
