Help, 2L camper starter motor needed 2day I think!
The story/reason
I have a tube frame buggy which moves about care of a Subi ej22 motor mated to a 1600 camper gearbox by way of a seagull adaptor kit.
Well I did until Lancelin (place with big sanddunes) where gearbox made interesting dying noise. So I have replaced it with a stronger 2L camper
gearbox (5 rib). Install went just fine until I went to start the engine. Starter motor just made a whirling noise because its not engaging the
teeth on the flywheel, the starter motor is from a 1600 semiauto and was working just fine with the 1600 gearbox, so I figure the starter is not at
fault its just that I need a 2L starter motor.
Thinking about it is that what I need? Or am I completely F@#$ed because I have a 200mm flywheel, going in a 2L gearbox and that can never work?
I do now know I should have put my 1600 bell housing on the 2L gearbox and all would be sweet ( thanx seagull), but its now all installed and I
don’t want to pull it all out again.
So in short 2 questions
1) will installing a 2L starter solve my probs?
2) Do you have a 2L starter in perth, wa with my name on it?
And for those in the know stop giggling or I will tell my mum.
2 L starter will NOT solve your problem.You need to install a different bell housing or a 2 L flywheel.If you change the bell housing over the
original starter should work.I'm not %100 sure if you need to change the input shaft in the 2L box as well due to the different length but might not
matter with your conversion.
*EDIT* I've just re read the post....if the gearbox is a "5" rib it is an 1800,NOT a 2L gearbox,therefore it should work.......Check the starter is
throwing out properly. Is the bush the right size for the starter to fit into???????? Bash it with a hammer....:jesus:alien:thumb

I thought 5 rib = 2L is I wrong?, anyways the input shaft was longer than the 1600 (3 rib) input shaft but I got engine in fine.
I do not belive starter is faulty as it was working just fine until I changed gearbox, I did hit it with a hammer just incase and I have removed it,
solenoid and starter are working fine, the starter is not a bushed type as its from a semi auto.
Just checked gearbox serial it is CP which means 2L,

the 200, 215 and 228 (2L) flywheels all have the same ring gear on them. The difference is the 228mm flywheel had a big pressure plate that sticks out
and would interfere with the one-way clutch on a regular vw starter. So the 2L starter has an extension like piece between the actual starter gear and
the one way clutch.
What you need to do is get some vernier calipers and measure how far in the bell housing (from the starter mounting surface) the ring gear is. Then
measure how far out the starter gear will come from the starter mounting surface.
You will soon figure out if it will work or not.
The question you then need to know is, does the 2L starter reach further, and as far as you require. This I don't know. I did measure it once upon a
time...
The 2 L starter reaches further in. A 2L gearbox has 6 ribs,not 5. If the bellhousing was changed to an 1800 the 1600 starter would work, which would imply a 2L would work in your case. Find a 2L knmbi and borrow one to try out.!!! Good luck!!

looks like Baja Wes is on the money. here is pic of starter housing as you can see ring gear is central.
I have used my finger instead of vernier calipers to measure depth and i can confirm that the ring gear is easily 15 to 20mm deeper than when it was
in the 1600 gearbox.
Sooo looks like question 1 has been answered, a 2L starter will fix my prob.
Now i just need to find a 2L starter with my name on it in perth.
Anyone got one to buy or even just to borrow for this easter. I wonna go lancelin and do more dunes.
I found some pics that I joined together to show the difference between the starter types. You can see how the 2L one is longer and has the extension
between the one way clutch part and the starter gear.
A word of warning, they are hard to find, and a little expensive. Look at the pic and make sure you know what it looks like in case someone tries to
sell you something else. The bosch number is SR87x.
Just to cap off yes i got a 2L starter, stuck it in and all is good started 1st time
