Engine not firing
RENNWAGEN - August 24th, 2007 at 12:53 PM

I have recently had an EMS stinger installed in my 67 VW bus as part of a Subaru EJ20T engine swap. The engine was tuned and running fine until I took it of the road for a couple of months for a few more modifications. Now only no 4 cylinder will fire. Some of the wiring was altered though i am 99% sure it all went back how it should be. There is power at the coils but only the one cylinder appears to be firing. It has fuel but I still need to check that the injectors are pulsing properly. Any ideas?

Hi

If you have a multi meter, back probe a injector connector and check for a pulse, also check for power and a pulse at the coil -. Get an old spark plug and double its gap then hock your coil lead up to it and crank the motor to check for spark.

I have power but no pulse at the coils so I guess theyre not getting the signal to fire. All new plugs I've pulled them a couple of times to dry them( definately getting fuel) they all appear brand new except the plug from no.4 cylinder that is a bit blackened so it must have been firing. The engine gives the odd kick and puff of smoke, it sounds like it wants to start but just won't get going.I've checked all my earths and have put the battery on charge but I think there is more to it than that.

check the wire from your ECU to the brown engine relay, might be a problem there.

EMS stinger you will have an ignitor, check the wiring out of ECU to the Ignitor

Yellow/Red connected to Yellow / Red
Grey/Black connected to Grey/Black
Orange/Red connected to Orange Red
Pink connected to Pink

Then check the wiring from the Ignitor to the coils (coil switch/pulse signal, not the constant power wire)

Yellow to Number 2
White to number 3
Grey to number 4
Pink/Black to number 1

Looking at the engine with the pulley in your face, Number 1 is the left front, number 2 is the right front, number 3 is the left rear (eg behind number 1) and number 4 .......well, is number 4.

The Stinger fires waste spark so cylinders 4 & 3 are fired together and 1 & 2 are also fired together. You need to check that in the ECU set screen, the set up is >

Number of cylinders : 4cyl/2 rotor
Ignition Type: Subaru Boxer
Number of Ignitors: 2

If you email me your map I can double check the set up.

Good luck

Paul

Ok I've traced through all the wiring and all seems ok I have fuel I have power at the coils but I only have the coil on no 4 cylinder being triggered during cranking. There is power at all the coils the ignitor is well earthed the wiring from the Ignitor to the coils is correct. There are two black wires that come out of the bottom of the ignitor that are run to earth. Any thoughts on what to check could I have a problem with the Ignitor? Paul I don't have a laptop but the car was running previously so the maps should be good.

The only thing that has changed was some of the wiring since the last it was running, I would be doubling checking all your changes before looking for faulty components.

I've sent you a u2u, other wise the list of things to check will go on and on.

Cheers
Paul

A big (if somewhat belated ) shout out of thanks to Paul 1303 for going a long way out of his way to help me with this problem. If he hadn't come around I'd still be sittting behind my bus bashing my forehead into the rear deck. Bus is running great:cool: Problem was a bad ignigtor.
