Hi Everyone
THIS POST IS A BIT LENGTHY BUT I HOPE SOMEONE WILL SPEND SOME TIME TO READ THIS AND HELP ME OUT.
Im new to the forum, im 15 and im really into building an off road buggy/sandrail folloing the CAMS manual [not a VW Beetle based Baja], I have had
some past experiences building smaller offroad gokart/buggy's and also 3/4 scale choppers. Ive been growing up with alot of engineering talk (my dad
is and aircraft maintance engineer, with about 25 years of engineering experiance) I have had close to 5 years of hands on experience with welding,
desing, playing around with engines and all the rest that comes along in the engineering field.
Enough talk about me....Now ill tell you about what my project is so you undestand what it is going to be.
The buggy is going to be a 2 seater off roader, 31 inch wheeels with about 22 inches of independent wheel travel, the rear might be a little less. The
whole chasis will be made out of 4130 chrome molly tubing. We are 99.99% sure that we are going to be using a commodore engine 88-9....ty something,
GM L27 to be specific. Now what i want to know is is a 1.8-2L Kombi transaxle will be strong enough to handle the V6 engine. We did manage to get our
hands on an 85 2.0 L kombi trans....and it only had 97,000Km...... Yeh thats right 97 thousand for $88 and after 5 hours of pulling it out a guy lied
to us and stole it from us in a way...but thats anouther lenghty story.
So will this VW trans to V6 engine Adaptation work?
Thankyou for anyone who will put some time aside to help me . :thumb:thumb
plenty of guys on here will let you know that the 091 76~ in is teh box of choice, with some minor mods they will yake an honest 200hp and with some
serious $$ more again. Wes will no doubt provide you with some info about his 200 hp baja with an 091.
Stephen
Welcome aboard , how about filling in your profile details sdo we know where you are , are you planing on racing this buggy if so do you realise you
will need to submit your plans before building the frame for a final cams approved / spec roll cage espiacally if you intend on log booking the car
for state events.
Now back to the box as Steve said the 091 2lt box will qute happily handle 200hp in a light car with not to many big shock loads from jumping and
landing but again you will also need to look at what cv's you are going to run as this is a good fuseable link for saving the box in that they will
break before the box or to get the wheel travel you are looking for you may need to use porche cv's that have a greater operating angle.
What rear arms are are you using ??
did you see it.....
is very cheap

Thankyou for the replies
We have been chasing a 091 trans for ages.... From what it seems like they are rare. the car yards either dont have them or they ask about half a
milloion for them.....But i did get some god news just before that my dads friend has got one, and we might be able to get the whole van for about
$1500. Or $200 for just the box....Just trying
to find out if it is a 2L, from what the guy can remeber it is from the late 70tys.
If i do end up buying the whole van...Do you recon that ill be able to recondition the engine and sell it for a good price. Anyone be able to tell me
how much an engine like that could be sold for? (just as it is.)
Cost for a Reco (Just piston rings, eals, gaskets plugs ECT)
How much they are worth after a Recondition?
Cheers

Normally 10:55am is school time, but its school hols for the rest of the week.
And good choice in aiming to do an engineering degree, I finished mine a couple of years back. Loved it and now there are some great opportunities out
there in the job market.
Yeh 'RMIT' university Says that if students complete a mechanical Degree, a job of at least $65 000 AUD per/yr is garanteed once graduated.
