To Braze or to weld a Modified EJ22 sump -bump

I've been driving my '82 Transporter camper for 5 years with an EJ22 with a cut-off sump. I always worry about the reduction in oil volume and that the smaller volume of oil is doing more work (per litre) than would be the case with a bigger sump.

I know I can buy a modified sump, but wouldn't mind having a go at doing it myself - that is, modifying the spare I have. I have loads of pics of various approaches.

What concerns me is the processs. I have seen people with welded sumps, of course, but I am probably not up to that. I have also seen brazed sumps. I have been told this is the only way to go. I have also been told to avoid it as there can be problems because of the the way sumps are pressed and that as a result brazing will often crack as it cools in this situation.

Before I have a go, I'd be interested to hear of others' experiences.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Reduce your oil change intervals to compensate and you'll live happily ever after

Well, I guess that's what I have done, but I still am not 100% comfortable. Still, it ISN'T broken!

in 5 yrs no problem
if no get hot no oil light on in corner = dont "fix" it:no:
also make change it oil often:thumb
