EJ22 to EJ20T
Volksaddict - March 17th, 2008 at 08:26 PM

hey people
am chasing info on changing my EJ22 powered dualcab to EJ20T.
i have been told the computers are different but are the plugs for the ECU different? what extra wires are in the EJ20T engine ECU that would be different? the adapter and flywheel the same? any other info i might need to know?
cheers
rhys

Hey Rhys are you feeling a little old right about now. As apparentley your old mans running around like some 20 year old :D:D:D

Your adaptor, flywheel and clutch will be ok. With the electrics, grab a ecu pinout chart for each and compare. I think you will have to relocate some pins in the plugs.

Also consider where the turbo and intercooler is on a EJ20T. If your fuel tank is in the stock location and you want to keep the motor stock they will clash. You will have to move one or the other. I moved the tank. I you want to move the turbo a PWR cylindrical water to air intercooler is the go. Check out VWRX synchro conversion on the web. It shows this type of relocation.

Hi Rhys, I am wiring up my EJ20T using an EJ22 loom (couldnt find any ej20T looms at the time). They are very very similar, only difference is that the ej20t loom has a few extra wires (4 coils instead of two, pressure sensor and wastegate solenoids). I have compared the ECU pinouts in the wiring diagrams and my loom and they are exactly the same. The ECU's are physically the same with the same plugs, but you will need the different ECU as it will have different software. Just make sure you get the same model series.

Adaptor and flywheel will be the same.

ahahahahaha andrew yer dad is acting young again..... no my username wont allow me to start threads so i thought i would use dads account too!!
brendan fortunately enough my kombi is a dual cab so i dont have the fuel tank in the same location as vans so its not in the way from what i have been told?
where are you running the intercooler brendan? i was thinking of moving it into the spare battery tray area and ducting it in?
any other catches i might come across?
cheers

My intercooler and turbo are in the stock location although I am using a Liberty water to air unit. My intercooler radiator is above and next to the starter motor and the circulating pump is where the battery use to be. This gives the right level so that the system does not need priming.

Regards

Brendan

ok sweet i have looked in your post do u have any pics of the intercooler etc mounted up?
and also anyone know if a new engine mount will need to be made or modify the one i have?
cheers

Mr Rat bug ( Andrew ) if I recall correctly can you please post up the info on the pin outs

I have a stack of wrx ecus here in the west & I think I may have a few looms in the shed

rhys the mounts are the same EJ22 are a smaller block but the mount holes are the same

you guys should be fitting wrx heads & pistions to your ej22 donks & turbos

kombi_kid - March 19th, 2008 at 07:13 AM

ok sweet is an EJ22 just a stroked EJ20 NA?

seagull - March 19th, 2008 at 07:35 PM

you can use a ej22 bottom end

or a n/a ej20 ( quad cam )

& turbo each

rocknrob - March 19th, 2008 at 07:45 PM

will the standard ej22 ecu cope with a standard sort of turbo?
:?:

kombi_kid - March 19th, 2008 at 08:16 PM

so with the fitting of EJ20T heads and pistons to a EJ22 lowering the comp ratio you can turbo a EJ22? obviously the exhaust flanges are the same for the turbo pipes etc?
sounds good in theory but still have to find a EJ20T heads and pistons and turbo setup and then do it all or just buy a EJ20T complete and do a few mods (bigger high flowed turbo, wind upo the boost, bigger intercooler) and achieve a good 200rwkw?
food for thought though!! how do u reacon the EJ22 internels (crank etc) would handle being turbod?
cheers

ej22 go better

there fine , many have done this , find a closed deck ej22 & your even better

Hi

You can tee off the oil pressure switch like most after market turbo systems do.

rocknrob - March 30th, 2008 at 05:10 PM

ah yes:!: thanks

seagull - March 30th, 2008 at 10:49 PM

you fit the wrx heads , this is the oil delivery & drain

1303Steve - March 31st, 2008 at 07:54 AM

even easier

rocknrob - March 31st, 2008 at 05:12 PM

Hi Neil i saw above that you have a variety of ecu's and according to "ratbug" above i need to replace my NA ecu with a turbo one of the same year. mine is a 91 liberty with a D5 ecu...what you have the sort of thing i need?:D

speedster356 - April 1st, 2008 at 07:45 AM

I used an NA 2.5 block I got for free and fitted USDM 2.5T pistons and rods I got new for $200. These pistons/rods were removed from one of the US 2.5turbo blocks that are being sold new here for $3k. The owner wanted to fit full forged pistons so he could run huge boost. Fitted my WRX heads and turbo etc. I'm only running lowish boost.

rocknrob - April 1st, 2008 at 02:08 PM

peter did you change pistons to get lower compression? stronger rods obviously. I only want to add minimum boost to my EJ22 cos its in a kombi...an extra 30 -40 HP would be fun:)

speedster356 - April 1st, 2008 at 04:05 PM

The US domestic STI 2.5 turbo pistons are stronger, and cheap! I think I ended up with an 8.5:1 comp? Cometic gaskets come in various thicknesses to get the correct comp. Check with your local Subaru performance engine builder and you might uncover some cheap new USDM pistons.

seagull - April 2nd, 2008 at 01:26 AM

Yes Rob , I should have what you need mate , I have a look & get back to you , yours is a 4 plug if I am correct .

I am very keen to get hold of ratbugs number so I can give him a call , I did have it here but some how have lost it :)

Peter hows things ? Mike is building his mid mount Vw bug race car , I have had a look at it , I can only hope its not as fast as my Silvia :)

kombi_kid - April 2nd, 2008 at 07:25 AM

what boost you running pete? good to hear from ya too u heading to valla again?
have seen on ebay a few cheap EJ20T's even a EJ20TT and auto gearbox for $950 buy it know??
will ring a importer up here and get a price for a stuffed EJ20T!
cheers
