Hi getting towards the pointy end of things with the conversion and found that my starter is not the right one to crank the engine! very frustrating.
Am i right in assuming that you need a 2ltr starter if using a 1600 box?
If so does anyone have one that i can get or a complete 2ltr box with starter cause it seems like the better option with gearing.

Nah, you only use the 2ltr starter if using the 2ltr gearbox or bellhousing. How come it's not the right one? not engaging, or is it struggling to turn over? I could turn my E20 N/A engine with the stock 1600 starter, and now that i've got a 2ltr box, the 2ltr starter turns it over as well. Its not the best, it sounds like it struggles, but I also have a puny battery. I am looking at getting a hi-torque starter to relieve the stress a bit.
My 2L starter was slowing down when the engine was hot. At dubs by the pub it temporarily didn't turn over fast enough to start. So I just bought a
new (remanufactured) 2L starter from ebay in the US (about AU$215 with shipping) and now it starts perfectly, hot or cold. It starts hot with all the
electrics on (high beam and everything). When I replaced it I noticed the old bush in the bellhousing was a little worn, so I replaced it with the new
one that came with the starter (got the old one old by screwing an M12 tap into it).
I doubt the high torque starters are needed. My V6 is 2.5L with 10:1 compression and the stock 2L unit works just fine.
I've got a 1600 box with a 2ltr bellhousing which means that i can run the 218mm clutch(the old engine was a 1600) but i didnt know about this little
problem untill i tried to crank it over and no go.
Its good to get confirmation about whats wrong and really its not a big deal. But if you know anyone with a 2ltr starter or even a 2ltr box with
starter point them in my direction please really want to hear this
thing going!!

if u are running the 2L bellhousing then yes the starter is different to the starter motor from the 1600 it has a different shaft throw and different
drive gear from the 1600 starter
either talk to volks conversions for a torque starter (think around $400) or buy a good BOSCH starter motor (only buy a BOSCH one for better build
quality etc )

I'm in townsville which usually means that i'm a bloody long way from anyone!! i sent a message to the guy that had that starter but i'm sort of leaning towards getting a new one cause if i'm going to spend about 200 on an old one why not get the new one that i never have to worry about?!

That is the starter I bought. US$149 + US$47 shipping. Took 7 days to arrive. Works fantastic. Just message the guy first and get him to confirm the
shipping to Townsville, which I guess will be a little more than to Brisbane.
I have sent that ebay guy a message and i will give the mackay no a call tommorow. but that was going to be the question i was going to ask do i just ask for a starter for a 091 or just one for a 2ltr box?
091 and 2L are the same
Got the starter motor today and trial fitted it to the engine and for the first time since i have had the engine it has cranked over!!!! So now i have
to get all the little connections and blankings done so i can put the engine in and try and get it started for proper. Thanks for all the help in
getting the starter.

I ended up getting one from that ebay seller that wes put me on to, Didnt get here as quick as Baja Wes's one but didnt make much difference cause i
have been working.
Its a re-co one but for the price and it comes with limited warranty, not sure how i'd go trying to claim it but it's there.
Going to get a new clutch cable and acc cable in before the engine goes in to make things easier

Got the Custom off road adaptor and the matching flywheel, and it fits pretty good fit. but if you do get it make sure you let them know what gearbox
you are running so you can get the right size flywheel.

Ive always used semi auto starters in my bug when it was running a 10.5:1 wasserboxer.
The semi auto starter is a slightly higher power rating than a manual starter, .8 hp compered to .7 hp.
The semi auto starter is also self supporting so it doesn't need the bush in the bell housing.

just from my limited experience that I'vehad now i can say that the 2L starter from the VW will crank the suby motor no worries at all, but if you have to buy the stuff first up it might work out the same pric but with the more power.
