anyone fit a 4A-GE 20-Valve engine to a type 3,have seen a couple bugs with the engine mod on u.s forum,
could have sump problems,,
be good to see something other them ej20t,the silver top is a good engine in standard form,
maybe not up to match a turbo ej20,but good every day driver....
cheers

I would really luv to know the answer to this too.

But mate, don't just settle for the 4A-GE... The following engines from Gen 4 to Gen 5 celica's & camry's are interchangable, and u can get urself a 2.2ltr 5sfe or 3s-gte turbo motor :

1.6 L 4A-GE
1.8 L 4S-Fi
2.0L 2S-FE (1986 only)
2.0 L 3S-FE
2.0 L 3S-GE
2.0 L turbo 3S-GTE
1.6 L 4A-FE
2.2 L 5S-FE

And from the toyota forums the camry 6cyl engine is suppose to also be interchangable with the celica 4 cyl (same mounting).

By golley a timing belt service would be a billion times easier with these motors on a bug.
Would luv to put my 160hp celica 5sfe in my little dub.

The earlier camry V6's are cast iron blocks and heavy.

Haven't seen a 4AGE in a type 3, but it's probably been done.

Have driven a 4AGE sprinter and Westfield. Also been in a 4AGZE sprinter and a 4AGE turbo sprinter. The turbo was the fastest but the lag sucked. The 4AGZE was the best, just heaps of torque everywhere (had a smaller pulley for more boost too). The 4AGE's are a nice enough motor but lack low end torque (they are a 1600 afterall). That's about all the useful input I have.... :)

Hi

That's nice looking motor with all the goods, but buy ignoring a Subaru motor with a flat 4 layout you end up with huge lump hanging way out back and high up in the air. Nice if you want to drive around with your front wheels in the air.

i agree with Steve
top heavy inline twin cam motors are one of the worst things u can do to a bug in terms of handling

stick to flat4 subi/vw/alfa motors

there was a reason my black beetle was getting swapped from a rotary to a subaru

Hi

I forgot to say, if your talking about good straight 4 motors, Mitsubishi EVO motors are my pick.

Steve

THUDKNUCKLE - May 6th, 2008 at 08:46 PM

evo engines are known as 4g63's they a nice motor and have a very strong top end , however my pic of inline 4's ( hint hint my project car lol ) is without heistation an sr20det and sr20vvt ( both with their pros and cons ) for instance one just has to look at the wieght , performance , and aftermarket support out there, they are a tough lil engine with nearly every nut and bolt upgardable on the aftermarket scene,

i have also heard good things about the 3gtse toyota engines as the seem to have a pretty solid support behind them 2 ,

anyways thought i would post my 2 cents worth ,, :)

Hello there,

I have a 4AGTE engine in my beetle
Turbocharged a 1.6 4age with a garrett.

Handling is great ( how do you know that inline engines
in a beetle dont handle? if you havent driven one??)
also a toyota 4a engine weights less than a subaru.

Excellent power too. Just because lots of poeple do subaru conversions dosent mean that they are the best engine option...

Smooth reliable toyota engineering with turbo power!
its all good.
Feel free to ask any questions you my have.

1303Steve - May 10th, 2008 at 10:53 PM

Hi

As long as your happy with your handling is all that all that matters.

No need to drive a Beetle with a inline engine, its a just a matter construction to understand that a in line 4 has 2 of its cylinders further to the rear of the car than a horizontally opposed 4 cylinder and an inline 4 has a lot of its weight well above that of horizontally opposed 4 cylinder.

Steve

with the extra weight at the rear with an inline four , it will most likely be ofset by the weight of the radiator, fan, mounts, plumbing and water up front.
im running a golf engine in mine and it handles perfectly!!

Joel - May 11th, 2008 at 09:52 PM

ive driven a bug fitted with an L20B and i also have just sold my other bug which used to have a rotary in it

to most ppl the effects wouldnt bother
but im very fussy about the handling of my cars
i could certainly notice it after swapping the rotary for a vw and rotarys certainly arent top heavy motors either

plus no inline motors fit under the decklid
no offence paul i dont mean this to be derogatory cos u have a really nice bug but u could drive a Mack truck between your engine lid and car

PS heres how to screw a type3

want my 2 cents?

i hop so coz here it is...

go nuts, only one way to find out!!

1303Steve - May 13th, 2008 at 07:51 AM

Hi

I thought of a Toyota motor that is an in line 4 but is flat, they put them under the floor in some Taragos.

Steve

Paul1968 - May 13th, 2008 at 10:54 AM

steve mate,

dont want to get too picky but a flat engine is not 2 cyclinders long. each bank is off set on the crank and the cylinder bore also helps determine engine length, ie a 2L
has bigger bores than a 1.6L etc. you know this I am sure
but just forgot to consider it.
So my 4age is very similar to my friends 2.5L subaru in length in our beetles, also a stock 4age is very light (alloy head) and is approx the same as a modified VW engine and much less than a rotary which is deceptivly heavy for its size (types do vary) or VW type 4.

anyway good to talk with you, how have you found
your new engine as compared to your vw waterboxer?
smooth and more power??

1303Steve - May 13th, 2008 at 11:53 AM

Hi Paul

I understand about the a flat 4 not being 2 cylinders long, same as a V8 not being 4 cylinders long. I haven't got mine running yet but my WBX was very smooth and I expect my WRX to be even nicer.

Yesterday I watched Subaru, N15, Toyota, Nissan, P76 - V8 and Holden straight 6 powered buggies. Mostly through Kombi gearboxes with the front ends being lighter than a beetle. You would think, according to above, that they would never mange to steer around the first corner. Never the less, around they went for 5 hours.

dont worry about the 5S-FE, go straight for the 3S-GTE, form what I remember, for the A series engines stick with the 4A 1600, and the S engines stick with 3S 2000 because the bigger 7A and 5S are not as strong as the smaller capacities, whereas the 4A ad 3S were builtwith performance in mind the bigger ones were made to get more torque with less RPM.

go for the 4A, lots of aftermarket parts available due to them being the choice of engine in AE86 corolla drift cars woldwide, 4A-GZE bottom end, 20 valve head and a turbo is apparently the way to go.
