65 Notch EJ20 conversion...small update.

Hey Guys,
The Notch conversion isnt far off being completed now..
65 Notch body,
72 Pan modded with tuning forks/horns.
73 brakes all round.
2006 Impreza EJ20 motor. 4k km's old.
OE ECU.
Heres a pic of the motor insitu..

Out of curiosity, how many litres of coolant/water would it take to fill the radiator and hoses with the extra length required to reach the engine?

Hi mate, I havent filled it yet but will in the next day or two. Ill let you know then. The radiator is out of a Ford Zetec. I could take a guess at 7
litres. Any special reason you ask?

yeah 7 litres sounds about right for your car...i have the rad in the front of the kombi and it takes about 10L

My buggy takes about 9litres I think. THe usual is about 3-4 I think.

hellnotch takes 17 L with the commadore rad......
nice install hutcho, you will be rapped with the performance i bet........
my sister is up for a new motor in her notch soon so i'll be watching this one with a keen eye......

Just curious cos it has a hell of a way to travel from the radiator to the engine and back again. Also, it looked to be of large diameter hosing as
well so I figured it would be well over what the radiator/engine set up would have required in it's origional car (I figured that the radiator would
probably hold between 4-5 litres normally).
Would the water pump be under any more strain having to pump the coolant further to the radiator or because there is no air in the system it makes no
difference?

^ re the pump. its not really under more strain because the water is in a closed system.

Hi Adam,The distance is a fraction over 2 meters. The pipe/hose diameter is 32mm throughout. Its actually slightly smaller than the
motor inlet/outlet which measures at 35ish? I had thought about (and heard rumours of problems with) the water pump. I seacrched around and couldnt
find any of these rumours substantiated though so I think its all just hearsay so far. Ive chosen a radiator that doesnt have a cap in the hope that
system doesnt hold any air pockets. The rad filler/burp tank (catches any system air) is the tank you can see inside the engine bay pic on the left.
Ive still to find an overflow/expansion tank. Being a longer cooling system, Ive figured that it will equal better heat loss (it the reason why I
installed metal pipes in) so perhaps the pump doesnt need to work as effectively. One way or another, Ill find out! Ive been eying off those Davis
Craig Electric Water pumps too but upon research, Im not entirely convinced on them...Cheers,Steve

Yeah it does. Had to cut a fraction for the throttle body though. Im considering on lifting the motor up a bit which will, as we are all aware of,
have another major benefit. Yes, the plan is to run AC. I cant think of any reason why not!

Crap! 17 ltrs! Do you have any pump issues?
The performance will be good but no where near as good as yours mate!
Even though my conversion has taken me a while due to research etc, its an extremelly simple intall once you have the right parts! When its up and
running, Ill be listing every part (and cost) Ive used so maybe others wont have to buy 5 of everything to see what fits and what doesnt....

More water just means it takes longer to warm up. Mine only holds about 5L I think, but it is rear radiator. Definitely run AC, it's cool (parden the
pun).
I'm running the Davies Craig water pump. It's main advantage was that it let me remove an empty power steering pump (acting as an idler), an idler
and an accessorie belt off the engine. It hasn't really done anything for the cooling, which it realistically shouldn't as the stock water pump
should be more than sufficient for cooling and pumping the water around.

My bro fitted an EJ20T into his Notch 13 years ago and it was installed in much the same manner as this conversion... My bro's has the radiator for
the intercooler up front also and it run perfectly cool in 40plusº WA heat through a 300x150mm hole in the front under the bumper.... Just make sure
you shroud the radiator well to direct the heat out the spare wheel well and seal it off from the front boot...

I have done an aluminium shroud set up on mine now that you would prob be interested in seeing.

Yeah, Ive yet to shroud the radiator yet. Good to hear your bros runs nice and cool. Ive got about the same size cut out in the front of mine.

While Im here, I might as well update this thread. I picked up a Charcoal/Carbon Canister and an overflow tank from the wreckers yesterday (late model
T@#ota) and fitted them today. I have to run another steel line down the car for the return from the Canister. Got a temp exhaust made up and
fittedwith a plug for the (front) Oxy Sensor. Theres a STACK of room for a good exhaust for an EJ20 in a Type 3.
Waiting to recieve the electric pump Ive ordered as the HP pump is struggling to suck fuel from the front of the car.

FYI standard dia Scooby pipes hold roughly 1.1 litre/metre.
My bus holds about 10 litres, including the XJ40 rad
Substitute litres for Kgs if you wanna know how much additional weight

Hi there. Car has been put on the back burner this year. It's in storage and will be finished over the next few months.
Wheels are Boxster 17 x 7's. Tyres are 205/45's Front and 205/50's rear. I sold on those Big Reds for obvious reasons. Although it's a dream of
mine to have them on a car I own, the Notch is far, far from needing them. Will be probably just running late Type 3 standard brakes for now but will
be looking at an upgrade soon.
