just had the timing(old fashioned way by setting T.D.P), and service done on my EA82T after its full rebuild(mains, big ends, pistons etc etc). Now its
running really well but its just started a new problem. It starts fine and it goes along great for a short while then its splutters under acceleration
to the point if i totaly floor it its like i turned the ignition off. I let off the gas and it ticks over fine and it mite let me accelerate or it
mite splutter and die. When it does let me accelerate its goes like the wind again.
Any ideas? its also had new injectors, plugs, leads, oxy senser.
it almost feels like i lose power(battery) but when u let off it always ticks over great. It was fine before it had the timing and service done.
i have the big trip planed to fraser island in two weeks and i am starting to panic that i am not going to be able to go..
any help, ideas i can try would be great..
Anyone who knows the car i was wondering how the hell did u time/tune it as the plug for the scan tool has been removed so there is no way i can see
to connect a scan tool to the ECU
steff.............................
this may sound silly but my merc did the same and all it was was a blocked fuel filter.
Worth a try
matt
Hey Steff, I dont think its a problem with the tune, I would say it may be an air flow meter problem or something simple like that, I had a similar problem with the old girl a year or two ago where it would feel like a flat spot on a carby kinda thing???, if it feels similar to that I would suggest cleaning the plug that connects into the AFM, then make sure the wiring behind the seat is secure, and also clean the main wiring harness plugs into ECU. Dont panic, see you up the beach!!! cheers peter
forgot to mention when it happens my mixture gauge jumps from just in the rish to the bottom of the lean.
its got a new fuel filter in it as the last one crushed down internaly(how ever u spell it)
no pete its not like a flat spot its totaly dies, as if u turn the igniton off untill u let of the gas..
steff..............
Yeah dude seems like the same problem that i had, I think if you turn off the ignition totally and turn back on it may stop the problem temporarily, if that is the case, it will be the AFM or Wiring problem that I once had, problem being is that I never actually worked out what it was!!!!!, all i know is that it will be one of those things i can garantee it. Try that, even when it is idling, play with the wiring behind the seat and see if it alters the idle in any way, just throwing things in the air.......................
That car has always had a dicky intermitant electrical problem.
The problem always was whenever you would goto fix it it would stop doing it.
As Pete said it use to go away if you turned it off and then on again. I always reckoned it was electrical cause when Ben Durrie did the conversion
all the way back then the wiring was never finished properly by the customer and use to just flap around behind the seat.
There was a spare loom kicking around and the plan always was to send it to e Al at sunspares, who now works for hims elf at AM Mechanica (somethig
like that) Yandina area. He is the Subie Wiring god and the pna was to get a fresh harness done and install it properly.
As for Fraser, I have a tow rope and a fridge.
yea what can i say about the wiring, its different for sure and i have had to replace a few bits as they were suspect. I had been thinking about a
whole new loom and i looked at the ones i got when i got the car from pete but none of the plugs coresponded to what i already have, theres one loom
cut which i guess was the original and a full loom but i couldnt find any matching plugs to what i have, mind u thats not saying much as wiring is
really not my strong point.
When i first got the car it did this and someone sugested the fuel filter had collapsed so i changed it and hey presto it fixed it so i guessed that
was the problem, maybe it wasnt and i knocked, bumped whatever the wire/s that is the problem.
oh the fun of it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
another weekend pulling bits off and playing around i guess.
one day, just maybe i will get rid of all these little gremlins and get to enjoy some motoring,
steff..................
Have you thought about the fuel pump. Had a car with the same problems and it was related to a faulty pump. Can you check fuel pressurwe when it plays up.
i had the same kind of problem with my ea 82t i sourced it back to the fuel pump. it would go ok for a while unitl the fuel pump worked for a while and got hot it would pretty much die then just go again very weird and annoying. i then fitted a swirl pot and fixed the problem.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!
changed the fuel filter and it seemed to fix it, ran fantastic, never missed a beat untill, i drop down a kerb and it coughed farted and started its
shit again so i have cleaned the conections on the afm,ecu and just about everywhere else.
How its like its only running on three, its brand new plugs, new injectors, leads etc. I double checked to make sure i hadn't knocked one loose and
they are all fine, Its running very rich(by the guage) hardly ever droping into the normal and never to the lean where before it was about half way
into the rich(bending the needle at the top how) and when u let off from a big foot full it would flash over to the lean then back to around the
rich/normal area.
only driven it for about 6 k's
help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
steff..........................
Dunno how else to type it but here goes anyway.. IT IS YOUR WIRING LOOM, always has been allways will be.
This car has had the same intermitant problem since day dot.
It drops the AFM out of the loop, runs rich, drops an injector farts / splutters runs like crap.
Relays drop in an out.
It needs to have the loom pulled out and gone through, it will have a dodgy connection, the re;ays even trip in and out if you give it a good shake.
People have taper it, cable ties it, stuck carpet over it and from time to time it behaves itself, sometimes for months at a time.
I told Darren, I told Troy, I told Pete and now I am telling you, this problem ain't going to fix itself. Either pull the loom and go through it or
find yourself a COMPETANT AUTO ELEC who can do it for you.
Anyway enough said, I think you get the point.
Still bringing it to Fraser yeah ? Never know it might rain all week and I will get so bored sitting on my ass I will pull it out and sort it for you
:>
yea i know its got some major wiring issues, it scares the crap out of me just looking in the back and under the bonnet!!!
i almost wish it will rain now :o)
but i think i have found the problem, well this one anyway. this morning i started it up and it was still running like shat, so i started one wire
at a time, dissconnect, connect on to the next. One of the wires that is mounted into the top plug going into the ECU is not connecting properly. Its
like the plug is worn and its loose. A hard push in with a small driver and its stoped all its shit and is runnign like a dream again. I plan to trace
where it goes this weekend to see if its the one casueing all the dramas.
Yes i know it will still need a rewire and it will get toit i am just a big short on cars funds after the engine. I would like to get the whole car
done as its been hacked about a fair bit and a lot of the wires are all the same colour even tho they are earths, positive and feeds.
still it running good so just the brakes to do and its fraser time!!!!
steff...................
The plugs going into and the pins coming out of the ECU in the older Subi's werent the greatest back in the day and were renound for being
tempremental,as brad said it has always been a problem with the car but as soon as you start trying to solve it,it starts running like a dream and
wont play up!!!!, see u at fraser, if she plays up Brad can tow u home
matt from rockys taking his buggy( if its fixed) or his mates Baja down on a trailer so if it breaks its got a lift sorted :o) NOT that its going to
bloody break!!!!!!!!!!!
Finished the outsides now pete, wont post pics just yet i'll let u see it on the beach first. its changed just a bit from the last time u seen it
litlle bit left inside to do then wiring and gearbox and its all done! YAYAYAYAY
