Best gearbox EJ22 conv??
acn9479 - October 6th, 2008 at 08:37 PM

Hi all just going through some of the old threads and thought that i would put this question out there again, what do you think would be the best gearbox for an ej22 conversion?? We'll split it into 'affordable' and 'OHmy god!!!' cost.

Brad - October 6th, 2008 at 08:47 PM

Guessing you have a Kombi ...

With an EJ 22 you want to use the 091 (2L , Six rib) with stock ratios. Works a treat.

In a beetle the single side plate IRS Box (3.88 R&P) works fine

The EJ22 is not a transmission eater like teh Turbo model

STIDUB - October 7th, 2008 at 10:25 AM

...and if its going to be turbo'd?

pete wood - October 7th, 2008 at 11:26 AM

albins gearsets in either will do the trick. although for a big boost/HP motor, you may be best going for the 091.

Id like to know also but I think Ill be just getting a single side plater. Anyone got one??

Then the chances are that it will be an EJ20 and not an EJ 22.

If I was going to use an EJ20T then I would see how much money I had and spend it on whatever I could afford using the 091 with rebuild and 4 spider diff as the BARE minimum.

I ate 3 x 2L Box's with my EJ20T in a week. And I drive like a Grandma.,...

Baja Wes - October 7th, 2008 at 08:49 PM

Brad's 33" mud tyres didn't help. Big tyres will put a strain on the box. A street car with street tyres will get away with a weaker box.

I have been running an 091 with a 4-spider diff since 2003 (with my 2.5L V6). It's been ok, but I don't drop the clutch in first on the road.

Wesley Wesley Wesley .. owning and driving are two different things.

You own a Baja with a 2.5L V6, as for driving .. I would probably put my km's on my buggy in a week then you put on your Baja all last year. That is why your box stays togeather and the fact it was fully rebuilt and you drive like a nanna cause you are to short to push the gas pedal all the way to the ground ..

acn9479 - October 7th, 2008 at 09:09 PM

Yeah just about got the kombi done with the ej22 conversion but having a couple of issues with the gearbox (002) and trying to find a 091 that i can use,but thought that I'd heard of some people using the 002 cause its stronger or something? but they most likely had some albins gears in it.
If anyone has a 091 let me know :D

If wes hasnt broken I should be right !!

hang on. I haven't driven mine since January :sniffle:

acn9479 - October 8th, 2008 at 06:29 AM

thats alright just lend me your box till you want to drive it again

pete wood - October 8th, 2008 at 08:54 AM

thanx for the offer. the box is finally back in. it's the myriad of sump repairs that are slowing me down.

I guess that's what happens when you LAND on the sump eh? :(

Baja Wes - October 8th, 2008 at 09:35 AM

I drive mine most weekends, but not during the week. I would have to check the odometer, but I thought I'd done about 40,000km since I put the V6 in, in 2003. So yes it's pretty low km, probably 8,000km/year or less. It used to get used more when it was the good car, but since I got the Passat last year it has taken over as the good car (quiet and fuel economic which is good with the high fuel prices). And of course the bike has been the primary work commuting tool.

re: the nanna comment. Brad, last time you challenged me to a race in your buggy I hosed you. As they say, when the flag drops, the bullsh*t stops :)

mm yeah I seem to remember a race on the beach out in the open nice and flat and yes your V6 did beat my poor little VW engine.

Now I am thinking though most times I go driving u don't want to come cause there is not enough time to clean 5m each side of the track before you drive down it.

Could be wrong thoug my memory ain't what it use to be. How about you come out on Saturday and we can have a play up the back yard :dork:

Baja Wes - October 8th, 2008 at 03:01 PM

Last time you followed me around your back yard you crashed into multiple trees, and finally had to be pulled out by the tractor as your engine and gearbox had decided to break free of your chassis.

pete wood - October 8th, 2008 at 03:06 PM

getting funnier!

As evidence I wasn't lying in my last post...

This is me going through Brad's creek.

And this is Brad going through his creek

This is me going up Brad's easy hill
http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/albums/BBBBBQ06/IMGP2197.jpg

This is Brad bouncing off a tree after understeering into it whilst using too much throttle going up his easy hill

There was one hill that you had to go up and turn around a tree on the slope, then head back down. I refused to do it in my car because I said there is no way a Baja can do that tight turn on the hill without smashing into the tree on the low side. Brad said I was wrong and I was a girl (or something along those lines). Here is a photo of Brad proving me right by attempting the hill and smashing his rear right fender on the tree as I suggested he would.

MickH - October 8th, 2008 at 05:28 PM

Soooo....Brad + turbo Baja = Accident. Wes + V6 Baja and degree of common sence = success.....All done with an 091 box, except Brad broke his. You should have towed him outa the creek Wes,add insult to injury LOL...

ratbug - October 8th, 2008 at 06:28 PM

I just put a 1600 kombi box up to my EJ20T yesterday. I wonder how long it will last for? Its only temporary to get the thing on the road while I work out who and when to get my 091 box rebuilt and with what other goodies. Engine has been rebuilt so will be taking it easy wearing it in, plus i got the smaller turbo on it.
I got an 1800box in my EJ20 (N/A) powered buggy now and its holding up just fine.

pete wood - October 9th, 2008 at 06:55 PM

be gentle with the throttle mate. :(

Brad - October 9th, 2008 at 09:21 PM

mm yep what I can I say BAJA's SUCK oh and I have some directional issues when driving.

And people ask why I had so many wrecks in my yard.

From memory though I had to clear all tracks before Mr Wes would drive on them. Thinking back when we were setting up most of the boys where running around moving large ass logs and bolders and Wes was walking around with pruning shears he stole from my wife.

Baja Wes - October 9th, 2008 at 09:31 PM

So I prefer not to gouge my paint with lantana and other scrub. Does that make me strange?

In short, in our circle YES ....:lol:

Baja Wes - October 10th, 2008 at 06:42 AM

that's good, I wouldn't want to be normal in your circle :D

55low - October 10th, 2008 at 05:08 PM

Guy's
With having a splitty bus 67 and IRS what would you suggest as a gearbox for either the EJ 22 or the EJ20 Turbo
and can you fit a 2 ltr Kombi Box into the above arrangement

Thanks in advance

pete wood - October 12th, 2008 at 04:35 PM

you could, but an Lbug box with an albins set would be just as good providing you don't want to run serious numbers or use it as a burnout machine.

acn9479 - October 14th, 2008 at 09:45 PM

Thought that i would ask what the go with porche gearboxs' is. are they compatible with the ej22 at all, a slight mod or a lot of mods? might be able to get one but i will know tomorow

Brad - October 15th, 2008 at 01:20 AM

With an EJ22 you will not need anything more than a 2L kombi box.

acn9479 - October 15th, 2008 at 06:34 AM

Yeah but i should be able to get a porsche one where at the moment i cant get a 2L one, so if i get this other box and some one wants to do a swap let me know:D.
Are you saying that it is to hard to worry about?

rocknrob - October 15th, 2008 at 07:04 AM

Which porsche box? I'll swap you an 091:yes:
