I been thinking about trying a turbo on my EJ22 for a while so thought i would draw up a few ideas...heheh well one thing leads to another...

if only i could just cut and paste...oh well better go buy some pipe and start welding...
Looks like its already been ceramic coated for you as well. Did you do these on some CAD program? Pretty cool.
looks like the yank turbo setups...only you put an intercooler on it. up there for thinking, down there for dancing.
you know I just don't get that. in the US they all post their red hot, "boosted" with EFI setups and when you mention the idea of an intercooler
they say things like, "aw yeah, y'all look back later and I'm gonna put some of that there water injekshun on it, y'know?" And yeah, I know, but
water injection was second rate in the 70s, what makes em think it's any better now? Every ricer and his dog has an Ebay air-air intercooler, but the
VW guys in the US seem alergic to it or something.
talk about two steps forward, one step back.
edit: just remembered something; if you're serious about putting a turbo on it, don't you need to keep the header as short as possible?
yes Pete now that i have actually crawled under the kombi and taken some measurements the headers are way too long...mk11 drawing on the way...heheh may even build it one day
i wouldnt say there 2 long
ive seen plenty of vw motors with that length and longer
obviously u want to keep it as short as possible tho
but there are guys out there that swear theres no such thing as too long.......
The reason you want the exhaust short with a turbo is that you want the exhaust gases as hot as possible. The hotter the gas is, the faster it is
flowing and the faster it will spin the turbo. That is why the top pic that Joel posted has thermal wrapping on the exhaust, to try to keep it hot
until it goes through the turbo.
I've seen a V8 with two turbos mounted in the boot.

so i've shortened the header pipes to an accurate length...what you see here would probably fit into a kombi with an EJ22 in it...oh keep in mind i
have a reversed inlet manifold...also i may need to tilt the turbo forward to give me clearance.
i have heard that a standard engine and ECU will cope with a minimal sort of boost...say produce an extra 20% power...can anyone confirm
this...not interested in low compression and microtechs...i just think 175hp would be sweet in a kombi that was only putting out 60hp a year go
with regards to the stock ej22 you would have to run very low boost, the head gaskets will not last very long at all . you would be best to get a 2ltr
wrx motor as its a cheaper option.
I am working through my projects & will do the build of the ej22 turbo project motor soon , the case is away getting bored now.
ej22 n/a case
forged pistions
wrx v2 heads
metal head gaskets
TDO5 turbo
RS liberty water to air cooler
