Liberty
71-BEETLE-SEDAN - September 22nd, 2009 at 05:57 PM

I was at the wreckers this afternoon and spotted a written off liberty.

I popped the hood to find the complete engine, not even the battery had been taken.

I need to check out what size it is and what and where everything i would need for a conversion is in the car.

Speedy responses would be appreciated because i think bits will be missing very sooon.

Joel - September 22nd, 2009 at 06:46 PM

all libs were 2.2 till about 96 then from 96 to 99 they were either 2.2 or the pov model had 2.0L

its stamped on the engine block just beneath the alternator

did you notice what year it is?

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - September 22nd, 2009 at 06:53 PM

I tried but preety much all the writting was in chinese or sumthin.

But ill probably go check it out again tomoro so ill let you know.

The only other thing is is there anything important in the corner where the battery is, it was the only spot that had real damage.

Joel - September 22nd, 2009 at 07:08 PM

just check the the timing belt area hasnt been damaged
ej22 are non-interference motors but if the cam gears been hit the belt may have jumped a tooth or 2
but nothing terribly important
just the fuse box which isnt needed

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - September 22nd, 2009 at 07:15 PM

Okay

Ill write a list of stuff that you have listed on your other thread and let you know how it all goes.

are you sure its not an import ? IE JDM Grey import

Take a photo and post it up

Joel - September 23rd, 2009 at 07:37 AM

i'd be surprised if it was

i know on mine pretty much only the australian compliance plate was in english
the one with paint, trim etc had a lot japanese scribble on it

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - September 23rd, 2009 at 08:01 AM

There was one plate that was english but it was all scratched up and was on the drivers side and the jap one was on the passenger but ill get pics up today at some point

BlueV2 - September 23rd, 2009 at 02:11 PM

I could be wrong, but there should be a year stamped inside the oil filler cap. Nothing to say it hasn't been changed with another engine, but it might be correct.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - September 23rd, 2009 at 07:22 PM

Here is the engine,

Here is a pic of the VIN plate.

I need info on engine size, because i saw a website that said its a EJ25 but i saw EJ22 stamped on the block.

Also the guy wants 650 for it, how should i check see if it runs.

Joel - September 23rd, 2009 at 09:54 PM

is $650 the whole car or just the engine?
its a 22 by the way

if theres no damage to the timing belt covers and nothing touching the fan belts putting the donkey dick back on the throttle body and airflow meter it should run if nothings damaged in the fuse box

helbus - September 23rd, 2009 at 10:17 PM

The way I would see it.
The motor would have to have been running for the car to be driving to be smashed!
If it has done under 200,000km, then maybe it will be good for another 100K, depends on it's service history
If it has only done low 100K then it should be a good one.
You would be very wise to fit new cam belt kit and new water pump no matter what when you put it in your car. They are good insurance.
You need the engine complete with flywheel air flow meter, wiring loom with relays igniter computer, engine mounts, exhaust just past catalytic converter including O2 sensor and wiring, carbon canister.
No harm in grabbing all hoses at the other end, not at the engine end, if you get to take it out yourself. Grab the fuel line clamps on the high pressure fuel lines etc.

I got all the above removed from vehicle and delivered from a 112K km vehicle for $1100 a few years ago, so $650 is real good.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - September 24th, 2009 at 07:23 AM

650 for the whole car.

Couldnt check kms cause didint have key but fuse box is ay okay. Timing belt covers i dont know about, i could turn the thing at end of arrow.
http://i626.photobucket.com/albums/tt347/71-BEETLE-SEDAN/Photo0092-1.jpg
What do i do bout the key. If i could get the ignition switch out of the barrel and use a screwdriver is there anything stopping me starting it.

Ive got one exam in the morning then i should be able spend an hour trying to get it to kick. I plan on taking oil, coolant, water and bit of petrol.

Is there anything else i need to take.

The whole car i spreety smashed, here is a pic.

Joel - September 24th, 2009 at 07:41 PM

thats only the A/C compressor clutch so it will spin on its own

you wont need the key to check KMs they didnt go digital odometers till late 90s

how the passenger side for damage? cos to fold in the middle like that has takes a fair impact, it may spent some time on its side

$650 is ok from a wreckers for teh whole car if it runs ok
it takes a good day to pull the looms out of them so its worth getting the whole car if poss rather than them cutting the shit out of the loom

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - September 24th, 2009 at 07:44 PM

left side seems okay cause mirror etc is still all intact.

I would be bringing the car to mine so ill be removing it all.

where bouts is the odometer cause had a look but couldnt really see.

But will i be able to start with just the ignition switch

seagull - September 24th, 2009 at 07:57 PM

I have cam covers here if you need them + other bits & bobs

Is the car maual ? duel range ?

looks clean from Perth

seagull - September 24th, 2009 at 07:59 PM

3 hours to get the motor & loom out , just cut the front off with a 9" & lower it out the bottom

Joel - September 24th, 2009 at 08:01 PM

its just in the middle of the speedo

it would have the same dash as mine they never changed it in that series

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - September 24th, 2009 at 08:04 PM

Yeah i had a look couldnt see it but, will check on way to school tomoro.

And its an auto.

Do you think i could see the doors and interior bit to get some money or what

Joel - September 24th, 2009 at 08:07 PM

you can try but its not really worth the hassle cos you get bugger all for them and lots of people wasting your time

pretty much all mine went to the crushers, the headlights and back bumper sold gearbox is still there

if its AWD then the gearbox will sell easy but FWD cant even give them away

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - September 24th, 2009 at 08:10 PM

Okay cool ill check that tomoro.

Will have a look for logbooks and stuff too.

What does noise am i looking out for if i get it started, like lifter rattle etc

seagull - September 24th, 2009 at 08:35 PM

The last FWD auto I had sold for $280.00 as it was needed for the out put shafts ( stubs out the auto )

Front drive shafts $130.00 ( larger than wrx units )

Electric door switches $200.00

Tail gate $180.00
carpet fits sedan or wagon $100.00 ( mine was clean )

$100.00 scrap for the shell

$78.68 loose change in the car

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - September 24th, 2009 at 08:47 PM

The tailgatei think is stuffed but yeah will check

Would that be much different in NSW

yep , that what the kids found

The RS turbo I have I found over $70.00 , three early $10.00 notes & the rest small change. To my shock needles & some packets with white powder & these little stamps with faces in yellow like this :) . No idea what they were & went in the bin

from now on the kids dont get to look first !

I named the RS , the drug runner

Baja Wes - September 25th, 2009 at 11:10 PM

that's a classic Neil.

I bought a 73 superbug for $50 to get the IRS gearbox, arms, cv's, etc to do my IRS conversion on my Baja. It came with free rats living under the back seat, and an awesome quality pair of blue plyers which I still use regularly! Not as much fun as $78 and some drugs :)

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - September 26th, 2009 at 08:31 PM

Update,

Its done 17100 kms, battery was dead today but got jumperleads for tomoro.

Tailgate is salvage able, its got non electric winows and the dash is stuffed cause of glass rubbing on it.

How much do Subi brakes sell for?

And how do i tell if its AWD

seagull - September 27th, 2009 at 01:55 AM

your looking for a tail shaft that comes out of rear of the trans and goes to the rear diff

stock brakes dont sell

seagull - September 27th, 2009 at 02:04 AM

If this has been on it roof , you would be best to remove the spark plugs and crank it over with out them. Water / oil / fuel is not able to be compressed and if there is any chance of these in the cyl when you start it there is a chance it will throw a conrod.

I think this is a FWD auto , as there is no fuse on the driver side strut for FWD mode over ride.
