I've recently done a EJ22 conversion to my car and have had starter issues since day 1. It starts but slowly like a low battery or timing out.
I have put a relay in the wiring.
I have run another earth.
I have changed starter(twice).
Still have the same issue.
What am I missing ? The battery is up front but has a large size cable running to the starter, and I have hooked a jump pack directly to the starter and it didn't help.
Is it possible I have 3 dodgy starters?

If your using vw starters yes they do struggle with turning over the late subie engines .
My best suggestion is to fit a cranky kit starter which is an original subaru starter modified and adapted to suit the vw bell housing .
We sell them at cvd ,so if interested give Eileen ring tomorrow on the below number

n/a ej motors are alot higher compression than vws so yea stock starters can struggle abit especially when the engines hot

i went the semi auto starter with mine and the difference was night and day but those cranky kits are a good solution

I'd always had trouble with Jezebel turning over, When you think that the factory starter was only designed to spin a 1600 with 8.5:1, not really surprising that even a larger Volksy motor caused the starter to struggle. At a race meet where probably fire up more than 20 times during the day, it was just a pain.

Have now got a Cranky Kit in and man - it's made a huge difference to starting !!! Totally different sound for one, and although doesn't sound like it's spinning faster, well since the engine fires almost instantly it's hard to judge. It's definitely the starter that's made the improvement, as hadn't changed anything else at all - not even a new tank of fuel.

Got my kit through CVD incl a used Subie starter motor, and yeah - can't recommend 'em highly enough !!!

Yeah same with me as well. Is use a standard 2L starter to start my old buggy (EJ20), its always started it, but it sometimes take half a second to get over one of the compression points, then it goes, like a half flat battery.
I got a hi-torque one in the new buggy (also EJ20), and its heaps better, I even have battery up the front with 2-Gauge cable. So yeah to solve either that or the cranky kit.

I had a semi auto starter in my old bug with a 2.1 WBX and 10.5 comp, it span over really well. The semi auto starters make a funny noise that sounds cool.

I'm not sure but I would imagine that are getting scarce and expensive.

Got my cranky kit in, been driving it all week and its great. Starts well every time. I'm happy.
