Hey guys.
Well pretty new here but been thinking about this project for years. Always loved the type 3s and dreamt of putting a rotary in one.
Now after reading about all the conversions that have been done I’m thinking I might go down the Suby engine road. I currently own a Subaru liberty
so iv also got a soft spot for subys.
My main question that will enable to get me going is the year of car i should buy. From what iv read the suspension changed in the type 3s around 1969
?? And went to Independent rear suspension ?? I was really wanted this confirmed and also your ideas on which would be more suited in a notch with a
suby engine either from a WRX or WRX STI. Iv seen both in great looking cars so im unsure of this. Also read something about a part that was being
tested that could use the original gearbox from the Suby ?? would this be a better way to go than using the original 4 speed ( even tho iv read they
hold up fine with a suby engine.)
Looking forward to your answers and ideas guys. I know im a noob but im very keen to learn and take on this project.
Cheers and thanks Vice.

Thanks bud, But i must be doing something wrong, I searched all the forum by user and No matches were found..
Got any ideas ?
Cheers Vice.
choppa ( Mark ) would be a goa. As faras I can recall he was the 1st to do this swap many years ago. He still drives the car every day . Mark is
located in Perth
Vice , you are after a V3 STI with a 5 speed 4.444 ratio ( using Todds conversion kit ). The motor has yellow injectors & a VF23 turbo , out of
the crate 11 second pass in a notch if can stop the rear wheel shake
I am saying this as my liberty does a 13 second pass
were are you located , I know of a few half cuts V3 sti
Seagull is on the money, a V3 sti with it's matching Subie box reversed would be the bomb in a notch. But I'm a bit biased....
Look up Klaus on this forum, he's got an EJ20T in a notch, or was it a fastback I don't remember (abeit with VW tranny). It's the older liberty
turbo with water to air intercooler and probably only puts out half of a v3 sti but is a good guide. P.s. I think it's still for sale.
Sounds awesome man.. Im in sommerville Vic. id be happy to pay postage if it came down to it
Cheers Vice
I must be doing something wrong iv searched all post for GTMac and Klaus and came up with no results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Vice.

Dam Ian , I thought it was my kids
Thanks heaps for the info guys.
Just wondering if a standard 4 speed would take one of the STI v3 engines ? I would obvously prefer the Suby 5 speed but just wondering if you need to
have mounts etc made up to hold the box ?? how much would a v3 with suby gear box cost to be installed ( estimate ? )
Cheers guys. I have had a read through subarugears briefly but its over my head in terms of knolege atm. Ill have to do allot of reading i think.
Cheers Vice
Hey Vice, drop me an email or give me a call if you need to. Happy to take you through the process.
If it all looks too complicated, we offer a complete, ready to bolt-in reversed STi box that will match the motor $5,300 outright or $4900 with
core.
Other boxes are cheaper (from $3400) but to be safe you would put the Sti box with the Sti motor.
All you do is unbolt your VW banana mount that normally holds your VW gearbox in and grind off the VW nose mount bracket on your pan.
Then you bolt in the Subarugears banana mount that bolts up to your Subaru engine mounts and weld in the Subarugears nose mount that bolts to your
transmission.
The plans and measurements to make the Subarugears banana mount and nose mount are on the website http://www.subarugears.com for you to use for free.
Any reasonable fab/motor shop can get them made in a few hours for probably $150 + $100 or you can DIY if you're a competent welder.
Our boxes already come with output flanges to suit VW or Porsche CV joints so you just need to have short enough drive shafts and you're pretty much
done.
Hope that helps....and sorry everyone if I seem to be pushing the barrow a bit. Just trying to get the information out there while it's all new.

Last Driven with ease ? Doest that mean you have to drive carefully with them ?
Cheeres Vice
So from what iv been reading and your responses. I take it iv got 2 options.
1. GO the normal wrx engine ej20t from a standard wrx with a kennedy adaptor plate, run the standard gear box and this will not need any reinforcment
to hold the engine in place.
2. Go the more expensive STI ej20t v3 with a STI box with the subaru gears kit. that needs some kind of bracing to fit the case.
From what iv read options 1 will give around 13 secodes down the Quarter and option 2 will be around the 11 second mark.
Also looking through Hellbugs buildup thread ( i think hes using the equilivant of the STI ) he has allot of extra bracing. Is this nessacary for a
daily driven car ? or is this purely becuase this is a track car.
Seagull it looks like you have been down this parth before. Can you give me a estimate on what a whole conversion would cost .
Another thing. Would this setup be legal in Vic ? I take it i would need a brake upgrade for a enginere to pass the conversion.. what else is involved
??
Cheers Vice
Also guys. Is there any difference in the Gear box`s in a 1500 to a 1600 ?? Years ??? would a 65 1500 be identical to a say 71 1600 ??
Cheers Vice.

Got another question guys..
Are all Type 3s IRS, I thaught i read that HellBugged was recomending getting a swing arm type 3 and converting to IRS.. Looked through wiki on the
type 3 and it didnt mention any changes in Rear suspension from swing arm to IRS ??
Cheeers
no all the early type3s are swing axle.
from memory IRS started in 69 with type3s
Thanks Joel. I did think i had read that somewhere..
So my question now is to swing axle or to IRS... I have spoken to Tod regarding his box`s and he told me that they needed the IRS, How about keeping
with the standard box.
Whats the issues with swing axle ? I take it handles a little different but any info would be appreciated. I did see a build up of a black bug with a
STI engine in it. It was swing and seemed like one of the coolest bugs iv seen.
Cheers Vice.
Ok so just read a bit about how swing axles work and their problems. Still would like to hear anyones experiance`s with them.
Also how hard would it be to convert a older swing axle to a IRS setup.
Cheers Vice
type 3 easy as conversion
Thanks for the quick reply Hellbugged. Can you give me a little info on the process that i can research ? Maybey a estimated cost.
Cheers Vice.
