I did a search for this and nothing came up so I'm going to assume that that the subject hasn't been discussed before.

I have plans for a subie conversion in the near future and wanted to know what my options are as far as gear boxes. I know we have the Porshes but to be honest I'm not sure that spending the money on one of those will be worth it when I could very well find a decent box in a Mexican junk yard that will do me just as good.

Is anybody using anything other than the standard VW or Porshe gear box? How much modification did it take to get it mounted for use? Please post pics.

VW bug and kombi, Porsche, Renault and now Subaru are used.

What needs to be done to put a kombi box into a beetle. Are they stronger? Is it the 091 that is most desired?

091 strongest (6ribs on top), 002 (5 ribs/1800 or 3ribs/1600 on top). The 091 has the strongest gears, but depends on the engine. For a stockish 1600, a 3 rib 002 box would be the ratios you want for big offroad tyres... which btw is what you'd use a kombi box for. For a street car, the late lbug/1303 single side plate is pick for a VW engined car.

5-10k for an 091 to fit in for subie, cutting/beating the hell out of the lower seat belt mounting area required, its longer than bug (my option)

3-7k for a subie to fit for a subie, its longer than 091 again, gearsets are 3-5k to stop them going bang... -ttreibler's gear + PPG gearset should be fine for anything

5-20k(mildly educated guess) for a porsche 915 / G50 to fit subie, - see steve carters build, or look on germanlook, oh & good luck finding a decent box for a decent price

1-5k (mildly educated guess) beetle box, adapter etc, - a certain person on here has a box like this surplus to requirements

Renault- good luck sourcing one, oh & its HUGE (see porsche G50 for an idea)

both vw boxes albins gears would be recommended, and a quaiffe/peloquin or whatever LSD
subie box, check out subie forums for diffs & gears (theres LOTS more options for these)
porsche - anything with porsche on it means higher price, that should be obvious

So for a 73 Superbeetle I'm going with the good ole IRS box. But strengthened gears and "stuff" to handle a turbo motor. There are a hand full of guys around here in Southern Cali that rebuild IRS boxes for sand rails with huge engines in them so getting one done up shouldn't be a big issue. Thanks for your input.
