Ej18 in a 74 kombi to get registered
shane91 - June 29th, 2010 at 03:12 PM

I'm looking at a 74 kombi that has been unlicensed for awhile now, it was converted to a 1.8l Subaru engine but not put over the pits. It got stickered for seatbelt and Tyres and never got rego'd again.

Since it's a 1.8l n/a, nothing has been cut or changed, just the new engine and wiring, asuming indicators, speedo etc work, will I need to do anything else to get it over the pits?, I keep hearing about an engineers report aswell, and some only saying you need one when the engine is larger size, what is the actual procedure for something like this?

I'm in west aus, I looked up on the transport website but there wasn't all that much info on different engines, any links to websites with info much appreciated,

thanks! :dork:

Just take it over the pits here in WA, shouldn't need engineers cert or anything

are you sure it's an EJ18? sounds like an EA82 to me.

I would be surprised if any state in the country would let a complete engine conversion go with no cert but hey stranger things have happened over that side

Pete Im pretty sure he mentioned it being EFI somewhere, the amont of EFI non turbo EA82s can pretty much be counted on one hand.

is probably just a EJ18 from a pov spec impreza

Joel, it's been a couple of years since I've had a conversion passed, but unless things have changed dramatically that's how it is over here. If the new engine is less than 1.5x the capacity of the largest stock motor the car came with, and no major structural changes have been made, then the conversion can be passed by a local vehicle inspector.

Geez you guys have it easy

shane91 - June 30th, 2010 at 06:46 PM

EA82? o.0

its a 1.8l, fuel injected, from a.. 94 or 96 liberty i think.., something like a pov pack yeah, nothing special.

i thought all 1.8l's were ej18, my bad.

and no luck calling up to get some definitive answers yet sorry, havent got around to it, whenever i get reception i forget all about it.

i'm going over to try get it started this saturday, it got stickered and then sat there for awhile and now wont start, so im guessing either water in fuel or just a flat/dead cell in a battery.

any other likely causes you guys can think of? it's a 40 minute drive to get there so might aswell take the right tools to check for everything i can think of and do it in one trip, if i get it started i'l see what it runs like, check for a cat and then head over to a workshop in my town to find out if they can register it, for the engine conversion side of things that is

It'll be an impreza engine if its a 1.8
Libs were only 2.2 and 2.5 till 97 then 2.0 and 2.5 from 98 on

there was a few 1.8s
the EA81 pushrod, EA82 DOHC and EJ18 DOHC

if its an EJ engine it will be marked under the alternator somewhat like this but still attached to the engine
