What sort of budget do you have, and what do you want out of it when your done?
Might help getting the right ideas.

There's plenty to choose from, hotting up the engine you have, going to a kombi/type 4 motor, subaru, rotary etc.
None original motors need engineering, brake upgrades, mounting radiators etc, costs add up quickly.

Don;t forget to give some TLC to the body, they are prone to a lot of rust.

They are a great car though and worth the effort!!

my pic for that car would be a 13bt. LOTS of hp available and been done before. PM 20bkombi and ask him how he did his wife's 13bt squareback.

the other obvious choice would be the EJ20t with a subaru trans. that would probably be a little cheaper and less concern transwise. a few of them have been done on here too. do a search in this part of the forum.

there are a host of other motors that are also legal now for that car which include up to a 4L V8 if I'm not mistaken. They are quite heavy so your options open up a lot. just remember, the more hp, the stronger your trans will need to be. The Subaru option is probably best for that now. Cheaper than porsche, renault or kombi and comes with the right ratios.
