subie conversions
mjwcookie - March 21st, 2011 at 07:28 AM

Is there a post or a simple thread where i can go look for basic info on conversions, pro/cons costs and types. i have used the search function, but not much has come up directly.

There is a lot of info out there, but is a bit confusing. Is there a workshop in Vic that does them or is it a DIY thing.

thanks.

There's not really a thread like that as such mainly because EJ Subaru engines haven't really changed that much in design through the 20+ years they have been around for.

If it ain't broke.....
They're all decent engines it's more down to what the owner wants from it and what vehicle it's going in.

For example if fitting to a beetle and just looking for a modern engine upgrade with good power, reliability and economy you would look at the SOHC engines as they fit a bug with no real body surgery.
They start with the 1.6L EJ16 and go up to the 2.2L EJ22. There is the 2.5L EJ25 SOHC but they are wider and take some cutting to fit in a bug or type1 engined kombi.
All are 16 valve multi-point EFI so have great drivability.

In a bay window kombi with a type4 engine bay or type3 the body clearance isnt an issue so the DOHC are much easier to fit.
The VVT versions of these can make some pretty decent power.

Then if looking at High Performance you get into the turbo engines.

It's one big can of worms but the newer they get the more complex the electrical gets, current Subis are using CAN-bus which is not easily adaptable.
The Fly by wire of more recent models also makes it incredibly difficult to retro fit into an older vehicle without alot of work and $$.

Thanks for that. it would be a conversion for a bay window or caravelle/vanagon. i like the idea of a 3 lt 6cyl. but a 2.2 injected would be good. I drove a 2lt nonturbo liberty in japan for 2 years and loved it.

either way the next question would be how goes it for insurance and registration in victoria

thanks.

Subaru/vanagon (T3) conversions are pretty big in Can/US
with lots of global info on this site.
