i have an EJ22 under the house which i blew a head gasket in...my own fault...long storey...anyway before i binned it i pulled one of the heads off
and there is no corrosion and no wear of the bores...
so i'm thinking of sticking new head gaskets on it and was wondering if it is possible to access all conrods through the sump and replace
rings and bigends...just bored and wanting to tinker...
Rob , you have to split the cases to do this.
But get a 2.5 ltr crank & the correct rods & turbo pistons and slap some GTB/ V3 heads on = 235 turbo power house
yeah neil...i see you can remove the pistons only by removing the pins via those little side plugs but may as well go the whole hog.wiseco turbo 235
pistons on ebay...i'll keep my eyes open for a 2.5 crank
Once you get the pistons out you may be able get at the big end bearings but it will be like performing heart surgery.
I've done this with a VW engine like that, replaced the big end bearings without splitting the case, it's a fiddly way to do it.
Those gudgeon pin access plugs hide well on EJs, I found the #2 was hiding under the water pump and #4 under the oil seperator.
Rob , If you find a 2.5 ltr I have two sets of new 257 STI pistions
1 x set never used $200.00
1 x set done may be 3 hours running $150.00
thanks neil but the idea is to use the ej22 block i have...96.9mm bore or thereabouts
fit turbo pistions to the 2.2 then. I find the dyno run on Geoffs motor
issues doing this Rob is oil clearance + 1 thou is required & getting good oil to the crank N04.
you can run 207 / 257 sti rods there around an can be had very cheap new ( removed from crate motor )
The run dow
Fully reconditioned EJ22
Wiseco forged pistons and ring kit
Brand new EJ257 Rods, big end bolts and head studs
ACL Race bearings
Oil Galleries have been enlarged and deburred
Sump baffle plates have been zinc passofated and modified
10mm oil pump
WRX Heads lightly ported and 3 angle seat job
New timing belt kit
550cc Denso Injectors
Parallel fuel rails
Early model STi Intake manifold with a modified Forrester throttle body
Equal length extractors with up pipe
2005 STi VF43 Turbo
thanks neil...they are very inpressive curves but this is for a kombi that still goes offroad...i want a curve half that height but starts 2000rpm
sooner...its fun figgering it all
so fit a TD04 or a VF8 turbo

Hi Dave i had a TD04 turbo on my EJ22 at low boost a while ago and it had far more grunt than the forester GT down low so i'll be going back that
way...
i need to push these big wheels up places like the other day up duck creek road to o'reillys...heheh i was the only one going up it...all the
4wds were coming down...

Gidday Rob, that turbo sounds interesting, what other mods need to happen to run a TD04.
Dave.
Dave good thing about kombi's is there is plenty of room to put the turbo at the back...you just need a manifold something like this one and a
standard intercooler and abit of pipework...silicon hose...
i kept using the stock ecu and it was fine

So a bit of pipe work, no internal mods, almost plug and play.
How much difference did it make Rob?
Dave.
going up the steepest hills was effortless...and on the motorway the thing was insane...you could lose your license hardly touching the throttle
I think I need one
What NA mods can be done with std 2.2 parts apart from a bit of head porting and equal length exhaust?
when you look at the cam timing for an EJ22 it is not at all radical...maybe some good old fashioned lumpy cams would work if you want high end
power...280 degrees or so...not my cup of tea though
Nah, I want to keep the low end pull and just make it pull stronger with more power. I don't like an engine with everything at the top. Nice and smooth from 1500 to 6000 makes for a driveable yet fun motor.
