subi conversion manual or auto
mjwcookie - May 30th, 2011 at 06:45 AM

Hi all. So it comes down to this.

My T3/25 is an 89 wasserboxer. It has a 3 speed auto box.

I want to replace with subi ej25 or ez30. Many of the threads talk about using the existing trans or moving to the stronger 091(i assume is manual), Either by bell housing or backing plate. I had been hoping to keep the engine and box together, to keep it a complete subi swap.

I dont have the cash for a new subireversed box plus clutch, clutch pedal conversion etc.

Will the old 3 speed cope with the power of the ej25 or ez30. Will the transmission ratios fit the new engine.

I am not into dragracing or burning rubber, just want a better drive with more grunt.

my choices are:
1 stay with the existing auto (can I get a bell housing for it) or
2 pay up and convert to reversed subi at $4000.
or
3 third option might be to convert to 091? and buy a used vw manual with revised gear ratios. but how much would that cost.

all advice gratefully received.

Mark

3 won't work out much different to 2 in cost. gears aren't cheap, and neither is labour. then you need all the other bits for a manual trans and install them. My bay was converted to a manual after all the problems my auto had. Not sure about what you have but on mine it needed clutch pedal, cable, tube, pedal bracket, manual shifter assembly. Then the wiring needs to be altered to delete the auto stuff and depending on your trans vacuum too.

This is a job you can't do right without a welder.

Someone on here used to have a T25 with an EJ20 turbo mated to a stock auto box, so they must take a bit of grunt.

Transaxle Engineering in California, USA has various parts that may help your autobox including manual valve bodies, heavy duty turbine shafts, etc. I'm going to use a vanagon trans in a type 3 nothcback with an ej205. They'll take a lot of power.

I'm originally from Hawaii but live in the Seattle, Washington, USA area now. Probably easy to tell from my vehicle descriptions. :D

hi ian. the link was helpful, but my question is about using the original 3 speed auto transaxle behind a ez 30 H6.Will it work or shred itself.

i had a v6 commodore motor bolted to an auto for several years with out any problems.you will need to change the stall in the convertor from 2500rpm as standard to about 1600rpm.you may find the the motor will rev hard in 3rd.i had extra clutch plates fitted as well as kevlar bands.line pressures were also increased.after 30 runs on the quater mile still ran 15.7secs

I'm not sure if the wasserboxers down there have the same transmissions as we have up here but the 090 auto trans is stronger than the 091 and is frequently used for offroad and drag racing applications. Some say they are good for 400 hp, I don't think an EZ30 will shred it, maybe an EZ30-R with AVCS and crazy launches would be pushing it. If you can find an audi 5000 trans of the same vintage in a junkyard, they had 4 planetary gears and an extra clutch in them, you can use the transmission section and bolt it to your final drive. Again, transaxle engineering knows the 090 and 010 very well and bolts them up to their V8 powered sandrails.
Hope it helps.

I have a 3 speed stock automatic mated to Subaru 2.2 in my 79 bay. So far so so good. Only potential issue I see is the final drive ratio. See my post on the Samba here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=434115&start=60
