Am seriously considering putting an EJ22 in my 71 DC as I already have the engine, loom and adaptor. I am not overly concerned with the originality
argument given the amount of new steel that I have put in it, a little bit more wont bother me if I decide to go back to aircooled.
I certainly wont be aiming for the radiator out the front and will be going the underbelly radiator style.
The DC has a 1600box.
Anyone on here done it ? I have seen a few bay conversions but was interested in the earlier versions.
Any advice appreciated - if it doesnt work out doable I will consider the 64 Beetle or the offroad buggy for the transplant - I will stop short of
putting it in the country buggy.
Cheers
Peter
i have done it in a 76 bay
I think the 76 will have the larger engine bay - mine has the smaller type 1 bay..
but regardless how was the gearing - what gearbox were you running and what was the cooling set up like.
Love your current DC by the way.
you'll be fine. the SOHC EJ22 fits in a beetle bay with minimal trimming. Should be no dramas in a LL bus, specially with the removable rear apron. A little trimming at most I would have thought. I would change the trans over to a 2 litre box though if you can manage. The ratios will work better and you won't be revving it's ringer off at 110kmh.
interested in how you go peter as im doing the same but at least 12months off although have subaru donor and a kombi wreck but will get there....
In my split the only part that needed trimming was the rear valance so lowlights would be the same.
Or you could fold up something to replace it if you didn't want to cut.
