starter motor options?
pete wood - July 30th, 2012 at 04:11 PM

Hi all, similar questions have been asked before, but I have an extra dimension. I need something that is the same size and configuration as the stock 1800 kombi starter as my setup has the starter almost hard up against the floor under the back seat. Ie. no extra clearance above the starter How do the cranky kits and geared starters compare to this?

The Cranky starters lean over pretty well, atleast on a type 1 box, a 5 rib shouldn't be much different.

Here's how mine sits

could you measure how high above the centreline of the starter pinion they go pls? I'd like to get one, but I don't want to spend all that money just to find it won't bolt up by 4mm.

Will try and measure it for you, bit tight for space under there.

I had the same issue, the Kafer bar was my problem though
The semiauto beetle/ T25 vanagon-caravelle auto starter I had was slow cranking a hot EJ25, cranky kit creams it in.

They are a pretty compact unit, Alot shorter than stock too, especially compared to the SR17 auto starter

Hi Pete

With the cranky kit you might be able to reposition the mounting holes and clock it a bit as long as still clears other things.

the 1800 starter I have is getting slower and slower so I need to do something before it stops altogether.

Hi Pete,
if you draw a line between the "engine bolt hole" and the stud on the bellhousing measure 100mm perpendicular to this and this will be your highest point of the starter....i have an 1800 box sitting here but naturally dont have a bellhousing on it  which wrecked my plan to take a photo of one

on a beetle box your looking at about 35mm higher then the top of the 76mm hole the starter fits into and even this is only the flange part of the setup the actual starter sits about 10mm lower

PM me for any more info....my email on the crankykits website has decided to shutdown...me and computers dont get along unfortunately

Awesome! finally got you. I've called CVD twice but they were too busy to call back. I'll try and measure it and send you the measurement. I'm sick in bed at the mo, so it will need to wait til tomorrow.
