seagull - April 30th, 2004 at 12:08 AM

I am working on a air locker for the vw kombi diff but before I go any further ,I would be interested to know if any one knows of a diff lock that is off the shelf already ?? so far I can not find one any were ?

I am not sure on the ( if there is a strong market for these ) but will build mine any way .

mmm thanks modulus , I knew I seen this some were ?

I have just stripped my mates holden HSV diff down HYDRATRAK thing , mmm what a heap of SHIT this car is thye rear end has fallen out 4 times any way ,the hyra thing a like a detrot locker no more , after I got it out ,and he left to get lunch .I decided to cut it open in the lathe , got a cuter $70.00 ground it to a V turned all the power off in the house ,max amps ,and started to cut it open ,I found that when they wear there is no were for the filings to go bearing bronze ( sealed from diff oil ) it has a hi temp grease that is packed in and sealed off .
I then looked at the kombi diff .I think I can fit this to the center a bit of machining a adapter ( spline ) a few mods and it will fit .

But there about $1300.00 so thats out .
The option your ref to is better .
look for the HSv with out a hydratrak at the car yard ! holden drive on !

This has possibly been thought of or even talked about before, but how close is a Subaru diff to a VW???

Is there a Air Locker for Subaru available(That could be modified)?

Craig Torrens - May 3rd, 2004 at 09:47 PM

Sounds like a group buy seagull !!!!

VWCOOL - May 3rd, 2004 at 10:41 PM

I'll be in on that, too. BUT take a look at the Lock-Rite (mayby lock-right) diff. They do a centre for the BTR diff (Falcon, Commodore etc). I'm sure they have a diff for the Kombi box. Not sure about Beetle

seagull - May 3rd, 2004 at 11:49 PM

craig , I have not seen the holden LSD ,the locker hydratrak is a mini spool small .I need to get hold of the following 2ltr kombi box , 1800 kombi box pdf format of the crown wheel and pion then run the holden pdf over that , with some help mabe here this may pay off .I would say if it works it would be a very good set up ,the hydra can be split opened and the shims replaced ,then rewelded ( dont tell the holden boys ) so need to get them first before they go in the bin .a air locker may be the go as well ,

but re this , my mate has a nissan 720 twin cab 4x4, nissan v6 he has fitted a air locker to the rear he was showing off smoking the rear big bags when he seen only one wheel was smoking he hit the switch ( air pump ) BANG the diff blew up . not smart .the other point when going hard ( oil temp ) is up they leak air pass the o ring seals you see hear the leak from the oil breather tube and when the car is in a standing position the pump runs ( no leaks from air lines )

Brad - May 4th, 2004 at 08:52 AM

if it isn't going to be a command locker of some type there is no point as an auto locker and spool is already on teh market, as is an LSD.

seagull - May 4th, 2004 at 11:34 AM

yep ,but the cost ! is_____

Brad - May 4th, 2004 at 04:13 PM

Ok I will reword for ya .. :)

I am only interested in a Command Locker as I like steering my buggy when I drive it. So if it is going to be a auto locker, spook, LSD etc etc then I am not interested.

Yeah I think in a Buggy the diff of choice is a command locker.

I think Vacuum Hypoid style Diff-Lock would be the best style as that way you don't need an air compressor.

Interesting. I notice on their site it says (about the vacuum locking carrier)

"The Vacuum Operated 4 Pinion Gear Locking Differential Carrier (pictured), can be manufactured to fit most conventional automotive Differentials"

and

"If you are interested in this Differential Lock Design for your vehicle - please contact us. "

I think someone should contact these people. They obviously have the CAD drawings of the carrier, if we could get the drawings, then draw a 6-rib diff, then we'd be able to figure out if it could work. They might even already know.

Brad - May 4th, 2004 at 05:33 PM

email sent :)

seagull - May 4th, 2004 at 06:42 PM

my relation ! runs these in his sand dune hill climer SWB jeep runing a super charged 351 v8 . I think this is what they call quadratrak ? not 100% sure .I do know it is vacuum operated

Chris the diff is totaly stuft after a race ! it wares the diff out I know a lot about this box and it good and bad points .the man is a legend amasing its made from a scrap plate and some old steel bar a old renault some old holden bits
.I had a look at the clutch after max raced it last .man it was just holding on ,fast car and big $ .
I worked it out a few weeks back for every 3 kmters you need to throw $100.00 out the window ,thats what max does .

pete wood - May 6th, 2004 at 11:22 PM

The idea looks great. I'd be interested in knowing if he can do one and what it would cost.
What do you reckon it would be like for the odd night at the drags?

Baja Wes - May 7th, 2004 at 08:36 AM

I reckon you don't need a locker for the drags in an offroad vw. I really really doubt you'll get any real wheelspin anyway.

11CAB - May 7th, 2004 at 10:31 PM

Has anyone looked into the syncro vaccuum operated diff locks?

seagull - May 8th, 2004 at 12:52 AM

I looked a vacuum locker to day and its in my shed ! there is spool with a fork that pulls the dog gears in .It has never been used as the guy did not know what it was for ? now to get it in the diff center

dubcab - May 12th, 2004 at 08:39 PM

If any one can make a switchable diff-lock I'd certainly be interested. I was talking to a guy a year ago in toowoomba at the klub vw show,I think his name was rudy, he was driving a syncro with twin diff locks. He told me you can fit a l.s.d. or switchable lock to earlier kombi's but.....the cost $2500 and $4000 respectively. For something your going to use about 5% of the time its a bit exy. $1200 buys a bloody good electric winch. So without sounding like a tightarse an affordable diff lock option is what I'm after.
