You can push my button!

Q1. Can anyone tell me what are the legalities for a push button start when going for a blue slip?

Q2. Would you consider a Baja a 'modified vehicle'. As in - do I need an engineers certificate since I have been out of rego. Never had one, at $250 don't want one.

I'm going to get a blue slip for the dog in a short while and I was wondering do I need it engineered and do I have to source another ignition and rewire it back the way it should be. It has always been push button for me and I like it that way.

if you dont have an engineers cert. for your car. (you dont need a mod plate in QLD just a certificate) then your baja is illegal. and if you are insured you will have your insurance voided for having an unapproved modified vehicle if you are ever in an accident. i strongly suggest you go talk to an engineer and ask them what needs to be done......you might have to put some stock wheels on for the approval etc and get it done.

Nick is mostly correct.

In QLD the blue plate scheme does not cover weird modifications such as the Baja conversion process. It is therefore not approved by an approved person (approval engineer), it has to be approved by Queensland Transport themselves.

So here in QLD a baja should have some form of certificate from QLD transport signed saying the Baja conversion is done properly.

The only exception is if the conversion was done, and the car was issued with a defect notice, then they simply inspect the car, note it has been converted to a Baja and the conversion is ok and sign that, effectively making the defect notice an approval certificate. That's what I have for my car from the previous owner.

So I'm guessing you gotta talk with the RTA.

Nothing is needed in NSW . Go get a blueslip and register it .

I like your answer MR930. As I'm in NSW the Qld. rules might as well be for the U.S. Thanks anyhow guys.

I have two 4wd mates and one was saying I need an engineers cert the other said just go and blue slip it. I'm glad I can just blue slip. Thanks Mark.

Now - How about the push button start or ignite it?

lots of people just install push button ignitions when the switch in the tumbler goes but u can just buy a new switch (not the whole unit) and use the same key so if they say no then just do that no dramas.

MR930 - October 9th, 2004 at 06:48 AM

Push button start is ok for rego.
