Tie-rod ends help
Chewy - December 1st, 2004 at 08:56 PM

Will the earlier tie-rod ends (65) be strong enough to handle a bit of recreational of roading?
Or would it be better to go with the later model larger ends?

Has anyone got experiance with using the earlier ends off-road?

Also do you think its nessecary to beef up the spindles or will they handle moderate off-road pounding?

Thanks

standard will be just fine
you can cut up a sway bar and stick it down the long steering arm if you want more strength for cheap

Do you have experiance using them off-road??

I have standard early tie rods in my manx buggy and haven't stuffed them yet. And it goes offroad, up the beach, that sort of stuff.

It's more a question of how you plan to drive the thing. If you plan to offroad race or get huge air of sand dunes then you may want to upgrade.

If you just plan to drive down some dirt tracks or down the beach then the standard are fine.

So I guess it's more a question of what you consider recreational off roading?

I suppose i'm planning to use it for driving 4wd trails, going out camping in the bush, sand dunes and just stuffing about trying to climb hills and whatnot.
Not planning to race any time in the near future, if at all, don;t even want to think about jumping it or anything.
But i'm sure I'll encounter some situations off-road where there will be no other way than to make them take a pounding, but it wont be a frequent occurance hopefully.
Jeff Hibbards book reccomends using the later style ones but I don;t want the cost of buying all new ends and getting the arms reamed.

I guess I'm asking if one good knock is all it takes to kill them??

They will be fine....I've had trees jump out and mug me and wrecked the front end...the tie rods survived. If you're gunna jump or chase large rocks it would be worth the upgrade otherwise don't bother.:blah
