Buggy Hire on Straddie
11CAB - July 25th, 2005 at 07:29 PM

I went to Straddie on the weekend and had a chat with the guy running this buggy hire business at Dunwich.
Good to see more buggies out there.

wot a top idea - that's what I'm doing next time I'm up there!!

MikeM - July 26th, 2005 at 01:21 PM

I noticed these guys when I was over at Straddie for the Anzac Day long weekend. Unfortunately I was in a hurry for the barge and I didn't get a chance to drop in. I did take the 2 secs to take a photo to get the website address.

While on Straddie with the Manx I got a bit of greif from the ranger for having a non-4wd on the beach so I wrote these guys a note when I got home.

Quote:

Hi,

I was over at Straddie for the Anzac day long weekend and camped along main
beach with my family. We took the Manx across and I noticed you business
but unfortunately we were running late for the barge so couldn't stop in
for a chat.

While we were camping on main beach the ranger approached us and said that
since our vehicle (the Manx) wasn't a 4WD it wasn't allowed on the beach
even though we had a permit. He didn't ask us to leave but he told us that
they occasionally have enforcement officers on the beach booking people
driving on the beach without permits or people driving 2WD vehicles on the
beach. He said is was a $375 dollar fine or something ridiculous.

Anyway coming back to the barge I noticed your hire business and that your
buggies have annual beach passes. I was wondering if you have had any
issues with the local authorities with regard to the fact your beach
buggies are only 2wds?

In the next club newsletter I will be sure to mention your business as we
have several members who holiday on Straddie regularly and I'm sure they
would be interested in hiring a buggy.

Thanks
Michael

And this is the response I got back

Quote:

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the positive feedback....
According to local laws (Redland Shire Council) beach buggies are permitted
to drive on the beach. We have a copy of the laws on file here in the shop
if you would like a perusal the next time you are over on the island.
I know the ranger in question as he also harrassed a number of our clients,
but I clarified his error with the required legal documents and we have not
had any problems since.
We would be very appreciative if you were to pass our name onto any
potential visitors, and look forward to meeting you in person.

kind regards

So they seem like a helpful bunch. I'm going to drop in and say hi next time I'm over there.

The orange buggy is an ex VolksMod buggy. VolksMod took all the country buggy running gear out and sold it to these guys.

Here is what it looked like when VolksMod had it.

Looks a bit different now.

The white J&S is an ex VolksMod buggy too.
I spoke to the guy and checked out their buggies and he mentioned the trouble you had Mike.
But as he said, there is a clause in the rules especially for beach buggies.

What a bloody good idea, I wish I thought of it:D

Full day is $170, 1/2 day $140.

It costs about $90 to get a return ticket on the barge to straddie. So if you take your own car is costs you ~$90 for that barge and ~$10 for the beach permit. So you can take $100 of the price.

So for only $70 you can hoon around in someone elses car and not have to worry about cleaning it afterwoods.

Doesn't sound to bad really.

KruizinKombi - July 27th, 2005 at 02:38 PM

It's a pity the exception is for buggies, and not for kombis.... :cry

I think maybe I'd risk the fine ;)

I'd like to get a photocopy of that so I can keep it on me when I'm driving around straddie. It's easier to contest the fine before you get given it. If you don't have the documentation on you and they give you the fine you would then have to contest it in court.

pusslux's, cruisers etc think their hot shit....we get heaps of them here up the beach on Bribie and their the ones that shred the dunes to bits trying to drive up them specially at night time wrecking it for everybody:vader

72FASTY - August 27th, 2005 at 07:21 PM

It seems to mean that "Full" to be 6 hours and "Half" 3 hours.

• Beach Buggies 6 Hour hire $170.00 3 Hour Hire $140.00

from http://www.stradbrokeholidays.com.au/car_hire/car_hire.php

But 6 hours hire sounds great and perfect for enjoying them on the beach there on the Island. :)
