Is there an aftermarket pivot box worth using? I have been told the only aftermarket ones are too flimsy for offroad. Is the only alternative to cut
them off a type 3 suspension crossmember?
The swing axle box has died and I can't find a working replacement and have decided it is time to give the buggy IRS and replace the pan halves.
Anyone sell the offroad pan halves and body lift already cut? be nice to save me some hours of fabrication time, can weld it all on ok.

I have a Jig I made to do this conversion (we used type 3 pivot boxes, not too hard to remove) you could either borrow (if you pay the freight to and
fro) or buy for a nominal sum.
It was fairly easy to make, I followed instructions from an article on a US offrad site. From memory it was from the Club VW offroad site.

Ben was kind enough to loan me his jigs, but thanks for the offer! The problem with getting Custom Offroad to do work for me is getting my buggy to Stafford when I live in Newcastle. I was toying with the idea of a full rebuild but I'd rather be doing that over winter not over summer when I really want to be using the car. I'll find out how much they sell the pivot boxes for, I'm having trouble finding a rear end I can cut up.

bugger it you might as well go subi while you are there
you will definitly never go back then
hehehehe
I bought a set of these of Brad last year and must say they are much heavier than the V-Dub ones. I had a look at a set Sharpbuilt had at the Gold
Coast show and they where the import thin crap that give aftermarket pivot box’s a bad name. These ones are made from 5mm plate and have all 4 sides
unlike the 3 sided import folded stuff.
Custom Offroad also sell prefab bolt in lift kits for Buggies and Baja's. I am sure they can also provide a set of the 2.1mm checker floor halves I
saw down there in a buggy a while back.
Probably sounds like a free plug for the place but after buying some shit quality parts (off others ) in the past I was very happy with the stuff I
got off Custom Offroad so just thought I would let you know so you could learn from my mistakes.
Good luck with the IRS conversion you will never look back. Don't forget to do your frame horns and shock towers while you are at it. Maybe go Kombi

do you need to remove the torsion bars when welding?
I have just done another IRS conversion and couldn't find a Type3 back end-so cut some from a Beetle pan-took a bit longer to cut out-but they cleaned up really good and the job turned out OK.I had been on the look out for months for a Type3 so had to resort to the Beetle.Didn't know any body here was making a decent set- could have ordered a set.My first one I did years ago-I tried 2 sets of those crap things from O/S-first set the bends were all wrong to get a good fit on the torsion bar tube, next set had no thread in one hole and the other one had the thread that cocked up,the pivot bolt wouldn't screw in, so I gave up-- couldn't believe that any body here would even sell them.
