Tell us about your Long Trips:

I took the Drop Bear for a nice long test run this weekend. 750 kilometer round trip from Dubbo to Newcastle return. We stayed overnight and enjoyed all sorts of sealed road conditions. As I was driving I was wondering about other peoples trips away and how long they can comfortably sit at the wheel of their beloved beast?

Please tell us a bit about your long trips. Where do you go? What do you take? Do you take company and what preparations do you do before and even along the way to ensure all goes to plan.

In 1998 I travelled from Canberra to Perth via Sydney and Highway One in a very hot summer in my buggy. I found that after a day in the seat of the buggy I'd had enough. so I never drove at night. I took my time and visited family and places like Wilpeena Pound. It would have been a real drag to drive a buggy all the way in a hurry.
In 2000 I went from Perth to Alice Springs up the Great Central Road and back via the Nullarbor, in the buggy and the same thing applied. A whole day at the wheel was quite enough.
I'm considering an around Oz trip soon but I will do it in a Baja to get some comfort. I want to be able to wind up the windows, listen to the radio and turn on the heater. Buggies are great cars, but for long trips that go on day after day they are really tiresome.

I drove from Brisbane to Canberra and back in the Baja (for the summernats). That was quite a long journey.

That was when I had a VW motor. With the L-bug gear ratio's and tall tyres it sat on 110kph quite happily. It wasn't too bad at all.

We've taken our Baja Bus from Brisbane to Sydney and Brisbane to Mackay....no problems encountered. Plus Brisbane to Valla every two years since 1999
