Any advise on getting my non mod plated baja registered?
i know i gotta send in the mod forms but should i send pics??
Will they want it over the pits??
it's a 63 wide eye kit.
what state are you in mick
U2U Mud Bashing Anyone??? and ask him to get in contact with Dave, they've recently had a few Baja's registered.
Im in QLD.
mick.
you will have to go and see department of transport, u dont need a mod plate in qld, but they will give u a list of guidelines etc that must be
adhered to, and anything non stock other than the baja kit will need to be certifyed by an engineer. probobly best to get some stock seats, wheels,
steeringwheel etc for the inspection.

guys wat about a turbo 68 baja in nsw? is that just asking for trouble ?
I am in Qld and my car was on the road as a Baja for a nuimber of years with no papers or mod plates. I have had it off the road for just over 2 years
and i was being told i had to get it plated. so i went to the local engineer who does the mod plates. He wasnt sure so he spoke with the big wigs and
powers to be and there reply was
" there is No chassis mods and the suspension is standard with no alterations then is is classed as a body kit, no different to some one fitting a
spoiler kit to a commodore"
so they have said bring it down and they will roadworthy it no worries.
i dont know if they are right or if something is being missed but i hear different things from different people. I spoke with my local main roads
and they are happy with the answers the local engineer gave. so it goes in the next few weeks for a roadworthy and bar a couple of changes(steering
wheel and seats) its plain sailing.
steff.......

Just so there is no confusion the following is the actual procedure in QLD. I know people get away with less but the following is the actual law. Do
what you want with it.
Step 1 – Goto QLD Tpt and get an application to modify, it is a 2 page form and also found on their website ( http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/resources/file/eb87360d9bdb1fa/Pdf_f1854_es.pdf )
Step 2 – Fill in the form with your details and write in the Chassis / Frame / Body section Modified and then fitment of a 7 Piece Baja Kit, tell
them what sort it is and attaché several photos if you are in doubt. If you know who made the kit and it is approved then list these details in there
as well.
Step 3 – Send the form into QLD Tpt. They will then send you a letter stating Approval to fit Baja Kit to VW Beetle, VIN 123456. Once you have this
letter you can fit the Baja Kit to it. The letter will also outline the conditions such as full width bumpers, engine cage, fitment in accordance with
manufactures instructions etc etc.
Step 4 – Once you have fitted the kit then arrange a time with QLD Tpt to go for an inspection, take your letter with you. They will inspect the
vehicle and if they are happy they will stamp and sign it.
Step 5 – All over you now have an approved Baja in QLD.
As I said before I have no doubts people get around the law in many different ways. BUT I can say with 100% assurance that the above is correct and
current. I have a RWC license and the appropriate references to back it up.
I wasn’t going to weigh in but I can only handle so much incorrect advice being given out in one post. The QLD Tpt employees are often their own
worst enemies when it comes to giving out incorrect advice that will bring grief upon a member of the public trying to do their correct thing.
If you have an accident in a Baja which has not been correctly approved then under the current legislation your Registration is VOID which means your
insurance is VOID which means you are in a world of hurt.
Thanx heaps for that, i sent the papers in today.
I would agree with there the own worst enimies i did alot of reserch and question asking and what i got was there are no such forms or approval papers and there for all you need is a rwc mind you i did this the first time in 03 and then agian 2 months ago and i asked 2 rwc workshops and they both rang up transport and they both come up with the same info and no one said anything when i took them in to get regoed . So if that info is true then transport don't know there own rules which is the case i would say
I am only going on what i was told by engineers and the peopel they spoke with. I have since gone back to them and told them that i do need papers
and there are forms etc. They rang main roads in Brisbane to which they got the same reply as before and they also spoke to two of the head engineers
in this area who do all the major blue plate mods and they also said the same. I dont doubt you brad but what are people to do? its not just local
roadworthy stations with people who dont kow its right up the chain saying i dont need any form of mod plates/papers.
Going from what you are saying brad thats for a new baja, what about mine? is was on the road for a number of years as a baja and i bought it already
done, i have just spent the last two years resoring and gettign it ready to use. how would i go?
steff..........
i have my stamped and signed letter from the transport dept.
its laminated along with all my certificates of modifications for my baja sitting behind my seat so if they pull me over i can reach behind me all
tell them to stick it .
it works a treat
cause its all legal signed stamped and they can say nothing but read
so you dont have to try and explain anything
Ok in short I am not going to get into an argument with people about who has said what to whom.
In short if you don't submit the above mentioned form and get the above mentioned approval then your Baja is simply not legal under the current
law.
If your Baja is already on the road and registered but does not have a letter of approval then bad luck you are not legal. If you have been told
something different then you have been incorrectly informed.
As luck would have it being incorrectly informed is no defence so if an accident occurs then you are screwed.
Now I could pussy foot around here and say how grey the world is but it isn’t.
If you have talked to Dept of Tpt employees and been told differently then I would suggest you get their Full Name and Employee number …. At least
then you have something to call back to. That being said I am pretty sure when the proverbial hits the fan they will not be standing there with you
agreeing that they incorrectly informed you and as a result your insurance is void.
If as some have suggested there is no need for approvals then why do they:
A. have a form to use
B. send it back to you with approval and arrange an inspection time at the pits
C. Stamp the form once you have passed the inspection.
Now I have nothing at all to gain from making this stuff up, not suggesting anyone is saying that I am making it up but I strongly encourage to follow
the steps outlined above.
After going through a great deal of BULL S^&T with the Iguana Buggy and getting it approved I can happily say that there is a lot of misinformation
out there. I have been forced to read 100’s of ADR’s and DoT Bulletins and there is so many contradictions and inclusions that it makes your head
spin.
BUT at the end of the day you need to understand that there is only one correct way to get a Baja on the road. Yes there are many different paths to
follow but they do not all lead to the correct place.
Now if anyone wasn’t to disagree based on what they have been told / done then I will happily help them out by disproving there method. Simply post
on here the following:
A. Who you spoke to at the DoT (Name and Employee Number )
B. What date it was
C. What contact number you used
D. What advice / information you were given.
I will then happily ring them up and have a chat about the issue and see what they are basing their information of.
The DoT has a policy in relation to the incorrect suppling of information in relation to such matters and funnily enough they are actually quite
stringent with its application to their employee’s
Well I guess that about covers it. I hope the above information is helpful, if not luckily for me I can type so I didn’t waste a much of my life
tapping it out for my own self ratification

Good research/advice Brad. Time and time again people with all sorts of modified cars say 'but my mate has one the same...' or 'I got it insured so
it's legal' or 'if it wasn't legal why do they sell it?' or (this one makes me laugh the most) 'I saw it in a magazine so it must be legal...'
etc etc
The general procedure is the same in ALL states and NZ: You MUST demonstrate your car's continued compliance with ADRs and state regs. The bottom
line is, if you haven't filled out some sort of form/paperwork for your modified car, THEN IT'S NOT LEGAL

thank you all,
its been great and im sure its answered many peoples questions
This is great information.
Has anyone got similar information for NSW please? The more detailed the better.
Thanks

Also don't forget insurance companies will do anything they can to avoid paying out in the event of an accident and I bet they'll find all the same details as Brad.
