i have a 1959 baja bug and im and running a country buggy gear box with reduction boxes on 33" tyres . now on the beach the gearing is pretty good
nice and low but on the highway at
100 kpm im doing about 3000 rpm what do you guys think and what are my options
Seems ok, Although my baja has a 1600 kombi box in it when on rally tyres for motorkhanas the motor often sees 5 000 rpm when sitting on a bout 110.
ALthough this is with a subaru motor.

Waddya got for the front end? I was wondering if a split rear end would go OK on a beetle, is the gearing on CB's the same as big nut splits?
Hey Mat, I saw your Baja at Valla....very nice.
You should check out the buggy & baja forum here:

The engine might be working too hard as that is taller than standard - around 3200rpm for stock
yeah if your engine is revving too slow...so is your fan
That combo is fine.
ok thx alot for the help guys
It all depends on what sort of engine your running. If you have more power, then you can afford the taller gearing. Don't worry about the fan not
turning fast enough, that's a bit of a myth.
At one stage I was running a 1916cc engine with an L-bug gearbox. With 31" tyres t gave a nice tall 4th gear. I drove from brisbane to canberra and
back for the summernats with that combo. It was good on the highway. Offroad it was fine in the sand, but on really tight hilly dirt offroad some
slightly lower gearing would have been nice. I later went to an 1800cc kombi gearbox with the same engine and didn't like the higher rpm on the
highway, but the lower first was nice offroad.
Now I have a V6 engine and run a 2L kombi gearbox. It gives low gearing in first (not that the V6 needs it) and then I run an aftermarket 0.70:1 4th
gear to make it sit at about 2200 on the highway. It's like a 5 speed gearbox with no 4th gear.
1600 kombi box with stock wheels sits on about 4000rpm at 100. your combo is just about right from what I know. My van with 225/60/15 with 2.0l bus box is doing 3000rpm at 100.
im running a 1600 i wish i had a v6
i had no prob with over heating on the way back from valla it sat on about 85c
