Reedy - October 12th, 2008 at 03:34 PM

Hello, Does anyone know the history of my Baja Soft top I just bought. Thanks

1916baja - October 12th, 2008 at 04:15 PM

Score! That went up for sale the first time just after i already bought my baja... from memory it looked like a solid car. I don't really know much about it's history but.

It was in one of the early Australian VW mags back in the 90's, was orignally built by Volksrestore in Brisbane

Was red , white and black back then with graphics on it

Thought it could have been Mark's. Got the stance. Not built by VR but sold him many bits and repaired his engines. Was red and white with graphics, there are photos here somewhere. If it's the one...

I always wanted to know where he got his bull bar from, because it's exactly the same as mine. I assume some place made both of them. Or he saw mine and had somewhere copy it, but that would be unlikely as I think it's not very attractive and not something I'd copy. I relocated my blinkers into the bullbar in 2002.

If you bought it I would be making sure it has had some rust repairs. To say it has done some beach time would be an understatement. The pan was pretty much stuffed, rear forks rusted through and tunnel held togeather by rust and tar. Heater channels where not much better.

Don;t get me wrong it has been through a few owners since I saw it last could be all fixed now

Here are some pics of it before it turned orange, when I owned it for a short period of time.

I bought it off Mark who was the guy who built it / owned it when it was in the Magazine way back then. I then sold it to Mick who painted it Orange and got it back on the road. He then sold it to some guy who sold it to the guy who had it on Ebay the first time. Don't know if he sold it and then you got it or you got it off him.

Anyway if you want to talk to Mick then he is on here under makin_tracks of something like that

Thanks everyone has been a great help I am thinking of turning it back to Its former glory (if you would call it that) But first will try to get rego on it.

11CAB - October 13th, 2008 at 05:41 PM

Where are you Reedy?

Reedy - October 13th, 2008 at 08:24 PM

Im at Canungra west of the Gold Coast and I am open for any advice or tips as this is our first vw. Hint Hint!!!

1916baja - October 13th, 2008 at 08:32 PM

Does it have a mod plate or papers? Was it registered as a beetle or a baja? Mine was never mod plated so i went through hell trying to register it... in the end i just registered it as a beetle and the transport dept never looked twice. QLD transport at beaudesert is the place to go. It's never busy and the people couldn't care less about what you are registering. Oh and welcome to VW's... This is the beggining of the end. Just kidding, you will love it! hell as hard as i try i can't seem to get myself out of them, It's an addiction, once you start you can't stop!

Check out the buggy & baja forum for ideas

Baja Wes - October 13th, 2008 at 08:55 PM

There is no such thing as a mod plate for a Baja, as there is no modification code to suit. Baja's only get papers.

Brad - October 13th, 2008 at 08:59 PM

Baja has previous QLD Tpt Approvals and rego as a Baja

1916baja - October 13th, 2008 at 09:10 PM

Well it should be easy then... And brad, I believe i need to speak to you regarding the red manx i purchased that used to be your garden ornament? Just wanna talk to you about previous rego and chassis numbers before i start doing any work on it.

Cheers,
Mick
