Baja IRS??
vwkj87 - October 21st, 2008 at 07:36 PM

Hey all, i've been reading these forums for a while and want to build a baja bug after driving my bosses one over on moreton island.

I am right in thinking the model to get is a 68-71 semi-automatic? As after long searching they seem quite rare and highly sort after. So was wondering how hard an irs conversion is, or if anyone knows of how-to guides or kit suppliers.

Now the main question I wanted to ask. I've heard a rumour that there is or was a place around Brisbane, that does irs conversions, or swaps pans, or sells complete pans ready for Baja conversion. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks for any help.

Thank you very much. That looks like the place.

If I get an irs conversion, what bug do i need then to get the right front end and all that?

The 76 models also came out IRS rear and balljoint front, and they were manual, so already have the clutch tube in them. I seem to remember there is one for sale on here at the moment.

Also Clarky has just posted up his 76 baja project

re front end, you can either balljoint or king and linkpin. I'd say work with what you get. The only big advantage with the later ball joint setup is that you get front discs standard.

Mine is a 68. It was originally a swing axle / ball joint. I drove it like that for years before finally getting custom offroad to weld in Pivot Boxes for the IRS. I bought a $50 superbug with no engine and used all the IRS suspension and gearbox out of it.

Thanks for the help, what body would you put on a 76 floorpan for a Baja?

any beetle body other than a superbeetle will fit maybe alec will have something there
a 76 pan is good as it already has the irs rear which is great for baja's

Thanks, i have the 76 pan, it's pretty good. I'll probably get new floor halves for it, then start looking for another complete car. Can you recommend anywhere to get parts?

Even a flat screen super bug could be used, now you have the right pan, if you use a one piece baja bonnet.

Well worth the $$$$ if you were going to build it anyway though
