Quick thing that has sprung up over the few months - I found using the T4 cv joints race prepped that my cv boots were breaking up every few trips.
What it turns out was happening, the axle was actually chewing out where the rubber boot is folded into the tin section of the boot. The stock T2 boot
only allows for maybe 20 degrees of travel.
So here is a quick fix for this using toyota hilux IFS boots. As a bonus these are alot more flexible rubber and cost about half of the vw boot and
alot more avalible 8)
Is a really simple thing really. cut the boot off the tin, grind the inside out of the tin (the bit the axle is hitting)
Weld a piece of 1/8 wire around the outside and make sure there are no sharp edges
Cut the bottom ring of the toyota boot, they appear to be generic boot used on more than one type of toyota and have three different locating rings
stepping down in sizes. The second fits very nicely over the vw tin and the welded wire fits inside the locating ring.
The very bottom ribs of the new boot are quite tight on the cv bolts and may be a bit of a fiddle to get on now, but I think as a bonus this may help
stop the bolts from working loose
Sorry about the cell phone pixs by the way
happy motoring

Now there is something that makes sense. Great information there. Good on ya for letting us all in on this one.
awesome idea
Does the smallest step fit type 1 Cvs? Has anyone tried this?
The universal stretch cv boots fit much the same and are available in step sizes.
is there a toyota part number or should they know what it will be if i mention IFS
I used that type on a Magna years ago..
but they cost MUCH more than a VW CV boot though...
they were top quality... maybe Repco??
I still have one here somewhere but can't find it at the moment
it had multi sizes both ends..

Paul - Not sure if the boots are original toyota (seeing as they are multi fit) but will check part no. and brand on them for you.
autobug, they cost me 12 bucks a piece
My '82 Camper is raised to the height of a syncro. I have had some issues with standard boots being torn so tried the idea that was originally posted. I fitted universal stretch boots instead of the Toyota boots. On the first trip out I have three torn boots after 1,000 kms. Are the Toyota boots a better bet as I don't want to go back to standard height? Is there another option? I thought of lowering the gearbox as per a syncro.
Long time since i dusted this off. bought some new boots today, so finally have a part number
Many thanks for that. I must get some. I have the metal bits made but didn't get the boots.

I have been ask about this a lot in the last few months and as a result have looked into it again as there seems to be a HUGE amount of CV boot
failures at present. The easiest way to get hold of these is though an aussie company called "STRETCH" their part number is CVS-11 and can be had
for about $17ea direct from them. There are literaly 100's of these for sale on the internet for between $0.65 - $45 ea, the stretch branded ones are
the only ones I can say for sure are the correct size, they also come with a 3year 60000Km warranty.
I have also been corrected in that they are not toyota boots at all but that they where sold to me as universal boots to fit a toyota. The title has
been changed to reflect this.
If I can get hold of some old CV boot collars I will start making up a few kits, to suit T1,2 and 3 buses. I am also looking at finding fitting ones
for the syncro front outer (as the plastic ones really are shocking!) and lastly I am measuring up to be able to offer them for beetles and type 3s as
well.
I bought a few years ago yellow colored VW CV joint boots made from polypropolene - no idea where I got them from. The black CV boots seem to crack
very early and then I replace them... before they rip....
I also have major problems with ball joint boots ripping within a few hundred klms... so I've always got new ball joints....
Polyproplene boots for the ball joints would be great too...

I'm glad this thread got revived.
I was just lying under my bus (as you do) and noticed that two of my boots have tiny tears in them and have started spraying the nasty stuff
everywhere. I glued them up for now but I doubt that will last long.
Might look into making some of these, thanks for the info Nils.

No problem smiley,

Im sure it will
Speak of the devil, hi bob
It was just time to let it go. don't get me wrong, hurts like hell. But it has been under a cover for 2 years now, and with travel and then kids
planned for the next 5 years I can't see that changing. Good to free up alot of space and some cash. Bob just made it a very easy transaction and he
seems like a good bloke. So its in good hands and I am sure I will see it again in its next incarnation.
Anyways, getting off track
Hi just thought some of you might be interested in these, i have the boots but have not fitted them yet so cant comment, and the cvs are a good price
for lobro 944 joints
