Hey guys
im currently looking for a Baja Bug that's registered to NSW. b4 i start making any serious advances i wanted to ask some serious question.
-what should i look for in a Baja Bug?(Specs)
-What model is the best?
-Iv heard that superbugs are a no-go when it comes to Baja's, why's this?
-How often do Rego'd Baja's come up for sale?
-Where are the best places to find Baja's for sale? (sites/papers/word-of-mouth)
Thank you for your time
any help is appreciated
Cheers Kosa
superbugs have front mcpherson struts which arent' as offroad savvy as teh awesome torsion bar unless you do extensive modding and some some of
today's offroad struts.
Bugs after 71 are under alot more mod restrictions with adr regulations that were brought out.
With second hand bajas, look for bent front beams at the front suspension (for non supers), as this is the first place a big rock on the ground will
hit.
and look for bent rear forks. (the gearbox/engine support). If one up, one down, or cracked at the top near the drive shafts, or the gearbox and
engine don't sit properly (on a slant), walk away unless you want to do extensive repairs.
Rust is more prominent, particularly if there is beach history. A pillars, wheel wheels both front and back, sills under neith and heater channels are
big rust spots. under the battery as well. My 67' i had years ago had rust under the window rubbers and up in front of the windshield. If there is
rust you can see, multiply the area of rust by 3 times and that would be about right b the time you get a change to dig out at it.
Suppension cops a beating, look out for bad shocks, ball joints, kin pins and bent tie rods. Without going ansie on a hoist, you can notice these
kinda things when driving (test driving), particularly if it wonders alot, has alot of steering play, bounces around too much or has unusual
vibrations.
Look for blue plate compliancing for the barwork and the body kit for easy rwc (if it doesn't already come with it).
the majority of these findings were discovered when i obtained my first car, it was a real dud. never buying sight unseen again.
wow thank you.
so much information its hard to sink it all in. are there any other places apart from this site you would recommend to look out for Baja's?
iv found one in S.A but im not game enough to take investigations any further, plus ill have to blue slip it anyway... so im kinda letting that one
slip...
how do u know if the bar and body kit has blue plate compliancing ?
You have a Pm mate
steff,,,,
I built one and had registered in Sa for nearly 10 years, i never got it changed over form bug to baja, it never gave me any grief either... is there any grey area where you could just convert and leave it registered as a bug. The internals and running gear are unchanged. As long as you cover the wheels appropriatly and the engine(maybe)
