4WD Stud Pattern - Thoughts!
The_Bronze. - August 28th, 2011 at 01:15 AM

Situation- I have 14" hot-wires on my Baja. All AT's have been phased out. Last 4 14" Kumhos in Oz sold out last week. I was too slow by three days.

I can't seem to find any 15" or bigger off road rims in a VW 4 lug pattern.

Not sure if I can usenadapter plates legally in NSW. Have posted a question in tech section.

Question:
How hard would it be to change the hubs over the a 6lug 4WD pattern?

Thoughts?
Links.
Discussion?

Any replies would be grately appreciated.

Regards,

Bronze.

Stock Beetle rims are of course 15", but they are very narrow. You can get a stock set widened, or find a set of wider 15" VW rims, they are out there! 14" rims are much more common because that was the fashion of the era, but there were both alloy and steel wheels made for 4 stud bugs in 15" diameter and various widths. I have even seen 15" Hotwires in 4x130mm stud pattern! If it's intended to go under stock Bug bodywork, most rims will be a maximum of 6" wide, so if you want to go wider you may have to get your own wheels made. Any of the companies who make Sunraysia-style steel rims could probably make a set of rims for you in 4x130mm PCD to whatever width and offset you desire. It would probably be expensive, but it is possible. The other option is to change PCD as you suggest, which would require a new set of blank brake discs and drums. You can buy blank discs and drums, meaning that you could then take them to an engineering shop to get them drilled to any PCD which you want.

Hi

ring John Sherman in QLD

He can supply New brake drums.... blanks that can be drilled to just about any bolt pattern that will fit onto the drums..

so, You just change Your front and rear brake drums with NEW items drilled with whatever stud pattern that will fit a VW brake drum...

probably the easiest and cheapest option...

then you can pick up wheels and tyres cheap

John also has adaptor plates..

cheers

Have a look on the manxclub forum, there are a few guys running 6 stud 4wd patterns...... but since you can buy new 4 stud baja wheels for a reasonable price, it will be cheaper than changing stud pattern

Thank you Wavman, Lee and Graham form your suggestion and thoughts / advice.

I'll give John a call and see what he can do Lee.

Waveman, I'm not looking to go too wide as the wider I go the less on road grip (tread psi weight) I have for stopping in the wet. I still want larger than standard but just enough to fill the guard.

Where do these Baja rims exist Graham. My 5 studs are obviously courtesy of yourself and I am grateful. Sady inwent and bought a Baja with 4 stud pattern.

I've contacted rim providers but to buy blanks and have them redrilled is just nuts as far as cost goes.

Should I just keep looking at the Buy Swap and Sell forums?

Are adapter plates legal? I'm not sure.

Bronze.

I know wheel spacers are illegal

and adaptor plates do space the wheels...??

so, I don't know... You can see them for sale..

mlc baja - August 30th, 2011 at 10:25 AM

Hi bronze

Volksconverisons supplied a 6 stud kit to a firend of mine good quality but slow delivery.

If you need any stud pattern drilling done I can help out as I did for my baja, but note the beetle hubs ae webbed and don't really suit redrilling to a 5 or 6 stud pattern. I used kombi 5 stud rear hubs and new front hubs. but the trick is the wheel offsets as beetles have Zero offset and most other modern rims have high positive or negative offsets.

great to see you got a second beetle well done......... I wish

Mate look around there are often baja wheels for sale. Have a look at my baja thread below i had steel cut wheels welded to 15x7" rears. They gave me a good choice of wheels, fronts were 15x5.5". I would think someone would have an old set laying around that you could get bead blasted and powder coated.

Good luck

Hi Steve, I advertised on AVD, Manx club website and Dunebuggy and bajas for wheels both 15x6 and 15x8 4 stud for my sons baja but had no replies in the end I ordered 15x6's from Mick Motors but the Meyers Manx website definitely has them now.

Hi Bronze
I am having the same problem. I called John a while back looking to fit hilux wheels to my Manx and he told me that he didnt think it was possible due to the hubs being too small diameter to drill out to 6 stud @ 139 pcd. Shame as the hilux wheels are zero off set and sitting in my garage:fakesniff: . The Meyers wheels look great but out of my price range.
Cheers

Gidday Bronze, I looked into thios a while back. Everyone I spoke to said VW rotors aretoo small for 6 stud as I believe they have a PCD of 139.7. I ended up buying a blank set through CBB and got Mike to drill them to 5x139.7 (Suzuki, Daihatsu, CJ jeeps and now KiA SUVs pattern) it was a mistake as I found it harder to get rims. PCD of 5x114.3 is a common size (ie, ford, jeeps, mazdas, mitsubishi, nissan etc); 5x120 BMW 'X' series
IF you checdk this link it lists just about every PCD used. It is American but is still worthwhile, Just wish I found it before I had rotors drilled.

BTW adapter plates, spacers are all illegal in NSW.

I have just purchased a brand new set of alloy rims 15x8 and 15x7 they are made by Performance wheels and called Challengers they are VW 4x130 stud pattern about $300 each:grind:

baghall - September 10th, 2011 at 10:22 PM

Just had a thought Bronze re 6 stud patterns. New nissan pathfinder/ navara has a smaller 6 stud than the standard 6 stud pattern. Maybe they might fit vw rotors.

63baja - September 29th, 2011 at 06:12 PM

My new six stud rear disks are coming from John at Volksconversions and for the country buggy front that I have
I am using six stud trailer hubs running HD ford bearings they are same size as early kombi and CB I am just about to start searching for the right offset floating disk to suit
this allows me to run neg offset Landcruiser 15x8 sunrasias on the rear and 15x6 sunrasias on the front

My word! $300 each for Performance Challengers! Surely you could get some kind of exotic forged European wheel for that. I suppose being made in Australia costs money.

I remember buying performance challengers in 14x7 back in 1990 in 4x130 for about $120 a wheel.

Was the guy who quoted you $300 a wheel called Ned Kelly or something, coz I reckon that's highway robbery.

grinderman - September 30th, 2011 at 08:55 PM

There are other brands that still make 27x8.5r14 off road tyres to fit the rims you have now. The last ones I priced were $150 each, they were toyo's I think
