well was thinking about a open wheeled rod,but what about rego,im in sydney,yes i did see the matt black one for sale,seen it at valla aswell with plates,but is it still rego'ed as a beetle,just not to sure with them guards so close to the tyre etc,,b4 i do it i would like to know about the laws etc,so if you are building one,and going for rego tell me about it....

As you know, laws vary from state to state. Over in WA we can rego a "Cycle Fendered" VolksRod if we go by the same rules as hiboy hotrods, in terms of how much tyre is covered by the guard...
I bought a set of fibreglass cycle fender style guards off a 32 Ford hiboy, but am not yet sure if I'll use those, or go with a smaller alloy set..
The mounting brackets bolt to your suspension components and travel with them, thus, the tyre to fender gap remains a constant, irrespective of wheel travel..
The laws that pertain to "Hotrods" in WA, do not class a VW as a donor vehicle for use as a hotrod, (I think this may be due to the age of the vehicle, but I'm not 100% sure on that point), however, the Good news is, the car does Not get registered as a "Hotrod" but rather as a VW, thus the car is Not subjected to the rigerous tests, checks, scruitineering, begging, pleading and general B/S that goes along with building a genuine rod...!!!
Great news... It means we can build a Volksrod, have a Real Cool looking car, and Register it as a normal car...

I,m going through engineering in vic and at the moment all the states are trying to align there adr rules so contact a registered engineer in your state .on the rear they may look if anyone could come in contact with the exhaust or engine because some one got burnt on the exposed exhaust on a cobra now they have to be consealled.
