thinking of building a volksrod
ran5 - January 23rd, 2009 at 06:25 PM
Hi all, been throwing the idea around of doing a rodded beetle, chopped, no fenders, low and nasty. Can anyone point me in the right direction, have
read a liitle about how they do them in the states, but dont have any info on any here in Australia.

well inshort after talking to engineers for 2 weeks and paying stupdi money i cant get the beam extension legal here, so the cars look a little stupid
wit the wheels where they are meant to be, that said i have ordered a beam, extension from volksrodders to put on here (300 US + 170US shipping) ETA 8
weeks. Hope is that the Police dont know how the beetles work and i will just say its a smaller bonnet or something ..

so we cant legally extend the front end, how difficult is it to do a legal chop? I suspect running with out guards is also not legal??? Can we get
some sort of club or hotrod rego on a chopped fenderless vw?

yeppas depending on the state i know down here in SA you need the guards but those really little thin ones work fine (like motorbike mudflaps). As for
roof chop, its a really big job, but one of the guys in this forum is actually working on a kit that will turn you old beetle in to a rod, all legal
including chopped roof i think. If you cant find it i will take a look later.

just a tip guys dont talk about doing illegal activities on here as there is members of the roads and traffic authorities of each state that have the
job of checking forums for that sort of crap and seeking out the people responsible.

Jeez, I had no idea that the D.O.T did that. You would think that driving around in a rod would get you pulled up sooner rather than later. Damn, will
they just let you guys have fun.You would think that these kind of mods are not super dangerous. Or are they?
Love the rod look though.

Any Modifications that have not been certified, will probably not be disclosed to the insurance Company
therefore if you have an accident you will not be insured
this can be very expensive
If you shunt an rare Rolls Royce full of Barristers into an antique chandelier shop. believe me
it will be very expensive
spend some money do some work and certify everything with an engineer

i certainly am not promoting that, just asking what is and what isnt...i think they will not see an issue with that.
cheers

thats alright mate there has been cases of people bragging on here about things that they have done, the best way ahead is to talk to your local
department and an engineer

Scary stuff building a volksrod, but worth it in the end.
Good luck

mmmm well my engineers are waiting to see the extension before they can say yes or no (could be a giant waste of money)
stoppa - January 25th, 2009 at 05:28 PM
the only way to do it in oz legally is to cut and lengthen the panhead

Yes and they will come and take you in your sleep and you will never see the light of day again.
p.a.r.a.n.o.i.a.
I'm planning on building a rod to take to speedweek + drags, so for me it don't need to be road legal.
Found an excellent article on roof chops over at the Samba - http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=345410&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Looks easy huh
This is what I really want to build
Cos this is the competition
If anyone's interested in getting a rod together for speedweek next year come join our group over at vdubber.com I can let you know the lowdown on
salt flat racing

there was 2 at the nationals last year very cool ad regoed in nsw the best place to start is with a sunbug that has the roof chop and the under body
pan already engineer with papers
from there it is reasonably fuss free depending the final result that you want.
so ask and build
