info on VW powered rails?
speedster356 - February 24th, 2004 at 04:20 PM

Anyone have any info on VW powered rear engine rails? This would be in Modified Dragster class. CC/MD.
Interested in the trans/rear end setup.
What do you think, powerglide up to a 9 inch? As I don't think you would have enough wheel clearance (with the narrow track) if you used say a kombi box straight up to the engine bell housing?

To run a powerglide and 9 inch you'd have to mid mount it, or else your engine will be way back.
I know Audi has a new CVT transaxle out on their current cars. I think that would be the go for VW powered drag cars personally :D big bucks tho :(

Yeah mid mount. This is what I mean about clearance. If there was no intermediate shaft between the clutch and gearbox then there would be not enought clearance between the heads and wheels.
This also looks to have been converted to a live axle as well.

cool man. I see now. Yeah, powerglide and 9 inch should work sweet in that layout :D:thumb

id definatly go with an auto up to a nine inch or similar. No reliability worries.

Marty Staggs in the US is running a turbo stock block VW configuration with a powerglide in rail.

8.52@158 MPH

Yeah Martys rail and the Paradise machine have got me hooked. Marty must run a wide rear track on that rail to have the heads inside the wheels. Ill contact him on shoptalk.

rails...mmmmm , real racing.
What do you think the cost of frame would be?
like I know you can do all the welding.
so its just the tubing / weld consumerable / tech inspection / bolts and fittings.
maybe 3 grand and 5k labour if you calc-ed your time

$hi* 8.52@158 MPH from a stock blocked VW engine thats crazy.

wish I had printed out this thread as we seem to have lost Half of it....
- I believe that I was "MADLY" encouraging Speedster - to
go ahead with this CC/MD idea,,
- that I thoght it might be adviseable to go to 4 speed
auto (someone said due to limited torque range of VW)
- that I had lined up a Diff for $50 " Commodore" however Larry says probably better to go for style like 9 Inch
that has one peice housing.
I liked the Diff I saw cause much Lighter but CV joints might be very difficult to mount & something else to go wrong.

OvalGlen - March 23rd, 2004 at 08:41 PM

Speedster also said that he would lke to u2u me...
and I'm waiting with baited Key board,
Am presently running in and out watching NHRA
drags whilst writing this..... . . . . .no Record times as Gainsville Hot and lacking traction.
-
So Speedster - is it still looking lke a go-er..?
Or just a dream.?
