Just got this email from a friend in the US.

These two links to websites have details of a VW that ran the 1/4 mile in the late 60's in the in 9.36 seconds at 168 MPH. It's a full bodied steel car too, not half fiberglass!

Another run that resulted in the car getting airborne ran at 183 MPH.

This was done with a gas turbine engine and a custom transaxel. Makes for an interesting read.
