i've gone off the idea of moon disks mate.... with my 4-wheel disk brakes i think it would be a real shame not to show them off behind some nice alloys....

As you would if you have 4 nice shiny disks to show off!

I went up there on the Wednesday for a look-they were held up for a couple of days-with water all over the surface from some serious rain the week before. The whole thing was awesome-out in the middle of 'nowhere',then suddenly this big salt lake thats about 200 mile long and 40 mile wide and as flat as billiard table. The area where the speed trials are held is quite large, but when you locate it on a map,it's just one pissy little corner of the whole thing. There was such a large assortment of different machines-it made the trip worthwile just to walk around the pits to check it all out. It's not a real good spectator sport, because you can only see them leave the start and disappear into the distance. We went to a spot about in the middle of the timing section, and were a long way from the track, but the noise of something going past doing 200MPH is a good look. Not often you will see Ford Falcons and Holdens doing in excess of 180 MPH anywhere. There were some Yanks there with some seriously quick motor bikes-the one that's the record holder(it looks like a bullet with little shopping trolley wheels) did a run late on the day,but somebody stuffed up and the chutes fell out just after he got going to the delight of the crowd.Well worth the trip if you ever get the chance.

speedster356 - April 20th, 2006 at 09:13 PM

You got it Matt...:thumb
supercharged type 4 2ltr running a simple carbed draw through on Methanol, magneto, no alt or cooling fan, 1500 swing axle with inboard shocks lightened drum brakes, 15" x wide 5 rims, CroMo frame/single beam front end with disks. Aftermarket buggy style r&p steering, alloy reclined bomber seat, 250kgs?
An enquiry has been sent out just today to the states for a repro P38 drop tank.......:P
Lets hear your ideas.:beer

I have a '70s hot vws mag that did a feature on a 1500cc turbo air cooled lakester that was very cool...I'll check the archives....had the spoked wheels and everything.

VWCOOL - April 21st, 2006 at 09:43 PM

another one of those 'do it before you die' things...

I have had the opportunity to go (spectate) several times, but always have been stuffed up...maybe next year

I'd love to do a VW to race...

dangerous - April 22nd, 2006 at 06:06 PM

Here it is 160mph in 1979 I think!

speedster356 - April 24th, 2006 at 05:10 PM

I'd love to read that if you can email/fax me a copy Dave.
Our belly tank is 24" in dia x 12' long.

speedster356 - April 25th, 2006 at 08:02 PM

OK, front end help.
What do you think of this setup?

Straight single beam front end with conventional spindles, trailing radius rods with twin inboard shocks on bellcranks. Twin motorcycle 4 spot disks brakes.
Advantages are light weight construction, low frontal area, low drag with inboard shocks.
With this setup will I need to run a panhard rod as well?

Craig Torrens - April 25th, 2006 at 10:23 PM

maybe all under a country buggy body............
