Guys, school me on these engines, and slide me an approx on a rebuild (parts only)

wanting to plug one of these into a type 3.

also what gearbox options would you reccomend?

all the parts alone for my one came to about $2500. new pistons, barrels, bearings, gaskets, oil pump, head studs, con rod bolts.

they corrode heads and head studs. good heads are almost impossible, and are about $800 each new. (from memory...its been a while)

rod bolts are a stretch type and should only ever be used once.

flywheel is the 5 bolt kombi arrangement but most internal components are similar to type 1 not kombi, so you can use type 1 cams etc etc.

Any idea what they weigh? I was thinking about a type 4 or a Wasserboxer but was concerned that it may be too heavy and result in crap handling.

maybe another 10-15kg more than the type 3 motor, but definately not much more. cant say for sure, other than I can lug a wasser around on my own but the type 3 motor is a 2 man lift LOL

wassers are almost always stuffed tho, so if you are going water cooled a subaru motor would be a better option.
