Watch the VW's fly... May 15
amazer - May 1st, 2005 at 06:55 PM

Round 5 NSW hillclimb championship.
VW's have an outstanding record at Huntley. Come see the best the state has to offer. See road registereds, sports sedans, open wheelers. Cheap day out for the whole family, gold coin donation only.

Where? Huntley Hillclimb, Avondale Rd, West Dapto.
From the north...
Heading south down the freeway take the 2nd Dapto exit (Fowlers Rd exit).
Turn right off the exit ramp.
At the end of Fowlers, turn left onto Princes Highway.
Approx 800m up the hill there is a takeaway shop on the right. Turn right just after it. (Avondale Rd)
Follow Avondale until you get to what appears to be the end of it and turn right again. Follow that to bottom of mountain, and you will see us.

From south...
Take Dapto exit, turn left at the end of offramp.
After you go around a right hand bend turn left into Huntley Rd.
Just follow the road out to the bottom of the mountain (it changes to Avondale Rd along the way).

Who's going?

amazer - May 11th, 2005 at 11:31 AM

Five Beetle drivers + possibly the most successful VW engined race car in the world will be there.

Craig Paton - May 12th, 2005 at 08:36 AM

Terrific, but who's beetles are going?

amazer - May 12th, 2005 at 10:22 AM

John and Nathan Abbot, Greg Ward, Craig Torrens.... eeerrrrm I lied there's only 4. I think theres a non registered competitor who will go quicker than those. Craig will still get a record and trophy most likely... just wait n see.

Other cars to watch are:

the V8 celica of Allan Barnes a very nice sounding car and damn quick.
the very nice Nissan Turbo Gemini of Adam Barnes which will be the quickest tin top if he can keep it on track.
Twin mini engined special of Warren Creagh... looks terrible, very quick.
And my favourite the Suzuki powered jedi, 170bhp in this...

I was looking at a program for 1993. If I had of been able to run my turbo kombi I would have bettered the record by half a second and been a FIGJAM too. Alas commercial vehicles at that time were exiled into Formula Libre.

Craig Paton - May 12th, 2005 at 01:33 PM

Thanks Amazer

Are you going to the meeting? If you are could you post some pics of the VW's?

Thanks

amazer - May 12th, 2005 at 02:29 PM

Im the event secretary so I will be there. I wont have any time to take pics, probably wont get to see much of the event.

speedster356 - May 12th, 2005 at 02:53 PM

It should be a great day, the southerners put on a terriffic event.;)
I'll try and get some pics on Sunday and post.
Just today I've been offered the use of a Suzuki Hyabusa powered 4WD hillclimb car, ex "Race to the Sky" in NZ and has run at Pikes Peak in the US. What a weapon. Maybe next round if it all comes together...:o
I think this is it in 2003 1st place <2ltr

Craig Paton - May 12th, 2005 at 07:23 PM

Great news Pete! I don't suppose that you will have in car camera?

Will a/one else be there with a video camera?
It would be great to see some footage of the meet for us Northerners! :thumb

Kai.A. - May 12th, 2005 at 07:47 PM

i think i'm gonna come down and have a look 'round.

never been to a hillclimb event in my life, but i do love just about all forms of motorsport and since there's vee dubs racing i really should check it out....

what time do proceedings kick off? how long does it run? is there a certain period of the day that shouldn't be missed???

hopefully see a few of you there on sunday, and i'll try and bring a camera that can shoot video too ;)

sax - May 12th, 2005 at 08:51 PM

I'll be there, video cam at the ready.

amazer - May 13th, 2005 at 09:59 AM

Its due to start at 10:00am.

There's 2 spectator areas, one at the start line, one half way up at the fastest point in the track. There will be buses ferrying people between the two points, its a bloody steep hill. Think 2 litre kombi even with 1800 box being flat to the floor and still not being able to hold full revs all the way.

There is NO shade protection at Huntley. BYO hat and 30+ sunscreen. Also, the weather can be like semi-Goulburn. A hot day at West Dapto is very hot, a cold windy day is friggin freezin.

heres a video of huntley

amazer - May 13th, 2005 at 10:11 AM

All the videos seem to make huntley look flatter and slower than what it really is. Believe me that when you walk the 200 odd metres to the spectator area, you're knackered.

I'm attempting to upload the best ever huntley video to my web. Its 8.9 meg so might be out of luck.

speedster356 - May 13th, 2005 at 11:28 AM

Is that original Huntley video from last years NSW round still on the web?

amazer - May 13th, 2005 at 11:36 AM

I dont know, that was the one I was trying to upload. I dont have the room.

amazer - May 13th, 2005 at 11:38 AM

Glad you all enjoyed yourselves. Sorry I didnt get to meet anyone, busy busy busy. I really enjoyed my time in the tower. Got to put shit on everyone I know, without fear of reprisal. Especially enjoyed watching the half loses, and ari vartenan rally cross impressions. Almost lost a beetle, not sure if it was nathan or john abbott but the right rear went in the dirt, the left front come waaaay up in the air with the car at 45 degrees to the track. If only I had a spare hand for a video camera. Greg and Craig both had some handfuls of opposite lock at times, exciting to watch.

let me know if the excel file causes any problems.

jakjones - May 15th, 2005 at 08:38 PM

Congradulations Greg.!

and with only 4 spark plugs

bat69 - May 15th, 2005 at 10:12 PM

It was me who decided to do the colin mcrae impression and tried to make a vw beetle perform like a wrx. Thinking of my rally days, forgot I was in a veedub. In fact I didnt really decide to do the colin mcrae impression it just happened. . . . . .

Congrats Greg on your win and the other boys for the competition. See you at Grafton.

Nathan

Sacrificed a few virgins while downing a few schooners of goats blood. It started raining on me on my drive home. Just lucky.

Craig Torrens - May 16th, 2005 at 09:56 AM

Sounds like the 21st I went to the night before...................although it's getting hard to find virgins at that age;)
