Roll Cages
Dannyboy - May 28th, 2005 at 08:47 PM

Guys i'm building a Notch which i'm mainly drag racing although wouldnt mind the odd hill climb / sprint aswell. I'm new at this so any help is good. It's my understanding for hill climbs etc it's cams that i have to satisfy , is it the same for drag racing?
It's only a budget racer , nothing flash but i need a cage. I know the 4 bolt alloy ones are no good and ideally i'd like it tied into the rear chassis and be what i'd call a "proper" cage that would satisfy all racing requirements.
Being an Early Notch makes it harder but i'm trying to get a rough idea on costs. Maybe something like Craig and Greg have in their bugs??
I'm trying to plan the build and the cage would be best done first really while the cars a shell.
Who can i see in Sydney ????

Cheers Dan;)

Hey Dannyboy,To build a proper cage cams approve using Racetech mild steel tube which is CDS, CDW or CEW .If you start tieing cages into chassis you will start paying more money. My advice to you would be buy a bolt in cage, check out CTs car ,he has one of these cages.I can tell you a cage like mind will cost 5 to 6000 dallors no change. Now if you want the cage approved must do a ROPS rego form to past.Danny ring me you have my number.JVLRacing

A 6 point cams/FIA approved bolt in steel roll cage with side bars will set you back about $1100 delevered (if you want to bolt it in your self. Its not hard to do). Like wise you could buy the weld in type which is a bit cheaper (if you know how to weld). Bond Roll Bars is a good place to start. They have the jigs for most cars. Ring them up and order one and it will be on your door step a few days later.

Bond Roll Bars
22 Carlingford St Regents Park 2143 (02) 9743 7005

I was there last week, ended up sitting round having beers.
He's moving in 6 weeks I think so a custom cage might take some time.

Pete no rush, i've got some work ahead. Obviously they would need the car as it's not run of the mill stuff. Would want the 6 point one mentioned. If it's around $1200 all okay at least i can plan the build around the cage and when it could get done. I'll give them a call to get a better idea thanks for the number.

I don't think they are cheap? It was about $2000 for my cage to meet all Cams regs up to international events such as Targa (the construction was cheap I thought!), and mine was only a 5 point kinda thing but all custom. Another $2500 to have the stress analysis done and to get it lodged with Cams being a first of type.

Just rang Bonds spoke to Peter . A very funny guy with a very dry wit and this is what i was told.

Firstly they dont really do "Drag racing" cages, mainly CAMS related stuff.

Even with a CAMS approved STEEL bolt in 6 point cage i wouldn't be allowed to drag race. The rules are different and CAMS cages are not up to the drag racing ruling bodies standard. It has to be made of a particular metal and welded in place.

It gets better though. If my car was running 10's or something ( yea okay) i would need a decent cage. This would be around $2,000. Thats to drag standards and is a full cage , door bars etc.
If my cars running 13's , 14's or so i wont require such a big cage. Normally just a rear section and possibly a door bar. That would cost around $1200.

Only question i didnt get answered was if its okay for drag racing would it get approved by CAMS okay? By rights it should if it's made of better metal and welded in?

So thats not too bad really. Still alot dont get me wrong but $2k for a full cage , $1200 for the half isnt THAT much considering the protection you'd be getting.

Thanks Pete for the number , got all the info i need for now

He's a funny guy with some great stories.......next time you speak with him ask him if he knows anyone that's been run out of a Mexican hotel by a twin six gun toting hotel manager:thumb
Or the one that involves a dozen huge sky rockets, a mexican sheriffs car and lots of local beer........:thumb
Him and his crazy mates used to compete in the Baja 1000 every year and cause all sorts of trouble.

LOL yea he started telling me some tails of the drag race scene here in Oz. Not a big fan of drag racing i feel though he did say he'd do it for me though and i know it will be a job well done. Blows my budget out the window but no way am i racing without a cage , no matter where it is.

Thanks again

The roll bar section of the cams manual goes for about 15 pages, you'll need a lawyer :P

Can e-mail you a copy out of the 1999 cams manual if you are interested. Regs haven't really changed that much since then:o
