Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

There are 4 Superbug/Lbug McPherson Strut Beetles that do supersprint races here in NSW. They seem to handle a bit better than the early bugs.

However the early bugs with the beam front ends tend to dominate hillclimbs; which may be because they're lighter. There are about 5 or 6 of those.

There are a few racing beetles in other states of Australia too. I'm sure no two share the same specification because everyone likes to do things differently.

I have an oval that I use for supersprints. We have our final two of the year next month which I'm looking foward to.

I'll attach some shots of the beetles I mentioned if I can find something handy.

BTW You're garage looks suspiciously clean and safe! I'm impressed with the safety cones. I can't move in my garage without walking sideways. It's amazing all the things you can set fire to when you're wielding a lit oxy torch.

I live near the Appalachian mountains in North Carolina and there are quite a few vintage hill climb events in the area. This is my first ever racer build so I'm learning as I go. One of the main themes for my build is trying to keep the car very light: gutted interior,1 racing bucket seat, removed door windows and replaced with plastic side curtains, no carpet, no headliner, no backseat, no bumpers, etc.

What engine combo do you have planned ?
Mike who is also on this forum (drag2180) , but frequents the Dragracing section, comes from North Carolina too!

Here are the specs of my "starter" engine combo:

SCAT built 1600cc VW Type 1
69mm Forged SCAT Counterweight Crank
85.5mm Bore
12.5lb SCAT Forged Flywheel
1.25 SCAT Ratio Rockers
Dual Kadron Carbs - AJ Simms Prepped
Bosch 010 Distributor
Engle 110
Stock valve VW Dual Port Heads with mild P&P
Gene Berg 1.5" Merged Header

The engine combo is kind of a two stage approach. This is my first ever attempt at building & driving a road racer. For the first year I plan on installing this fairly mild engine. The main goal of my first year will be to focus on getting the suspension setup and learn to drive the dang car! I want to start on the conservative side and as my seat time increases on the track I'll make plans to install my second powertrain combo. In a 1600lb car this engine should be enough to help shake the bugs out of the car during the first year of racing. I have yet to choose my "BIG" engine combo but I have narrowed it down to 2.L+ Type 1 or 2.0L+ Type 4 power.
